Dons Women Drop Tough 2-1 Decision to Pepperdine

(San Francisco, CA) - San Francisco women's soccer fought hard, but fell 2-1 to Pepperdine in the final game of the 2009 season at Negoesco Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Dons (7-7-5, 1-6-0 WCC) celebrated senior day against the Waves (11-7-1, 3-3-1 WCC), and secured a non-losing season for the first time since 2004.
Pepperdine tallied the first score, finding the back of the net at 34:55. Sophia Medina earned the unassisted goal on a direct shot from 10 yards out.
Early in the second half, the Dons tied it a 1-1. At 56:50, sophomore forward Molly Hall scored from the left side, about 20 yards out, after a pass from sophomore midfielder Joan Piasta. The goal was Hall's third of the season.
Pepperdine was not done however, as the Waves earned a penalty kick at 77:54. Callie Payetta got the ball passed Dons goalkeeper Kelly Pohle to make it 2-1.
Pohle took the loss, but had five saves in 81:19 minutes. Sophomore Sarah Garland started, and had one save in 8:41 minutes. Pepperdine's Roxanne Barker had one save in the game.
Pepperdine out shot the Dons 17-4, and held a 4-3 corner kick lead. Senior midfielder Kristina Hall led USF with two shots, while Molly Hall and junior defender Ashley O'Brien had one each. Senior Samantha Brand also had a good day in defense.
