USF Women's Soccer Falls 1-0 against #20 Pepperdine in 2003 Finale
Nov. 8, 2003
(San Francisco) - USF controlled play for much of the contest on a windswept day at Negoesco Stadium, but #20 Pepperdine scored a goal in the closing minutes of the first half and made it stand for a 1-0 victory in West Coast Conference women's soccer action Saturday. San Francisco (5-14-0,1-6-0 WCC) played hard in the final match of the 2003 season, but the Waves (13-5, 3-3-1 WCC) just capitalized.
Freshman defender Jennifer Brewer came off the bench to score at the 40:37 mark off a feed from senior forward Lacey Ubaldi. It was the eighth goal of the season for Brewer. Pepperdine managed just six shots in the contest and USF held a 5-3 shot advantage in the second half, but were unable to convert on two legitimate scoring chances.
Junior forward Stephanie Gray led the Dons offense with four shots, while freshman midfielder Chelse Hunt added a pair. Freshmen forwards Wendy Hugo, Shuree Hyatt and Kate Nelson each recorded one shot for USF.
Senior Jennifer Orantes (5-14-0) suffered the loss for the Dons, recording three saves on six shots. Sophomore keeper Anna Picarelli (13-5-1) earned the shutout win, making a pair of saves on nine shots.
USF head coach Pamela Kalinoski was happy with the way her team performed, but not satisfied with the result.
"I thought we played hard. We had several legitimate scoring chances, especially in the second half where we really dominated play, despite the wind blowing against us. I thought overall, our defense did a great job, especially Shannon Allen playing in her final match. I was impressed with the way Jennifer Orantes played and she helped keep us in the match. It is unfortunate we were not able to send this group of seniors out with a win today," Kalinoski said. "I would like to thank Jennifer, Shannon and Rebecca (Shook) for their contributions and sacrifices for USF women's soccer."
