USF's Annika Schmidt Named Third Team All-Region
Jan. 24, 2005
USF senior midfielder Annika Schmidt earned All-West Region Third Team honors as selected by Soccer Buzz and is the first player in program history to be so honored. One of the most decorated and accomplished players in her two seasons on the Hilltop, Schmidt was a two-time All-West Coast Conference Second Team selection.
Schmidt made an immediate impact after transferring to USF from North Carolina State, where she earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference First Team honors as a sophomore in 2002. The Welver, Germany native scored three goals and added a team-high eight assists for the Dons in 2003 and ranked second on the team in points with 14.
This season Schmidt added five goals and four assists during her senior campaign and helped the Dons to a 10-7-3 overall record and a 3-4-0 mark in WCC play, good for a fourth place finish - the program's best record and best league showing since 1997.
Schmidt leaves USF tied for fifth in career assists with 12 and her 28 points in just two seasons falls just shy of the career top-10 list. During her collegiate career, Schmidt tallied 18 goals, 21 assists and 57 points.
"It is a tremendous honor for Annika to be recognized as a regional player, given the large number of talented players in the west region," USF head coach Pamela Kalinoski said. "Despite only playing two years at USF, Annika left her mark in the record books. I believe she is one of the best overall technical players ever to wear a USF uniform."
