Sept. 20, 2004
THE WEEK AHEAD - This week has the Dons in the midst of their season long six game homestand, as they will be playing their fourth and fifth consecutive home games at Negoesco Stadium. On Friday Sept 24, USF (3-3-3) will be hosting the Beavers of Oregon State (5-2-0), at 5:00 pm, which will be followed by an afternoon affair on Sunday, September 26 against the San Jose State Spartans (1-6-0) at 1:00 pm. So far this season, the Dons have a 1-1-1 record at Negoesco Stadium.
THE WEEK THAT WAS - USF played three games last week, all at Negoesco Stadium, and managed to pull off a 1-1-1 record for the week. In all three games, the Dons showed flashes of their vast potential, and there are definite signs that the team is coming together.
The first game of the week, had the Dons hosting the Hornets of Sacramento State in a mid-week match-up. The tone of the game was set early on, when sophomore forward Shuree Hyatt was able to convert a Stephanie Gray corner kick into the team's first goal, at the 6:27 mark of the opening half. Shortly thereafter, senior midfielder Annika Schmidt was able to score her second goal of the season in the 21st minute to push USF out in front 2-0. From there, senior goaltender Stephanie Beall took over and ensured that she would be enjoying her second shutout of the season and the ninth of her USF career. San Francisco outshot the Hornets by a 21-2 margin.
On Friday, September 19, USF played host to UC Santa Barbara in another non-conference game. USF entered the game having won three of their last four games, but were unable to solve the UCSB defense and ultimately lost the match by a 1-0 score. The Gauchos came out strong in the first half, as they outshot the Dons 4-1. It was in the games 26th minute that senior forward Jennifer Borcich was able to beat USF goalkeeper Stephanie Beall off a header, for the games first and only goal.
After regrouping at halftime, the Dons came out much stronger and quicker and their efforts was reflected in the second half shots total, as they outshot the UCSB by a 8-2 margin. However, the Dons were unable to find the back of the net and were shut out for the fourth time this season.
Two days later, USF played their third game of the week and their fifth in nine days, as they played host to the Pennsylvania Quakers. San Francisco, fell behind early as sophomore midfielder Katie Campbell was able to take teammate Katie Cross' pass and place her shot just out of the reach of Stephanie Beall, the USF senior goalkeeper. However, senior midfielder Annika Schmidt was able to respond for USF and tie the game in the 26th minute, off a penalty kick from 15 yards out
As the game progressed, USF appeared to be getting stronger as they out shot the Quakers 11-2 from the second half through overtime. Sophomore forward Shuree Hyatt recorded four shots on the day, and came ever so close to scoring the winning goal in overtime, but ultimately was unable to convert on her opportunities.
WHO'S HOT FOR USF? - Sophomore forward Shuree Hyatt (7 points) and junior midfielder Stephanie Gray (8 points) have scored in four of the teams last six games. Senior midfielder Annika Schmidt has four goals this season, including two last week. Annika, is currently the teams leading goal scorer. Finally, goaltender Stephanie Beall has two shutouts this season, and nine overall in her USF career.
