USF Women's Soccer Weekly Preview

The Week that Was - USF played two games last week and won them both, as they defeated the Oregon State Beavers by a 2-1 score on Friday, September 24. Two days later on Sunday, September 26, the Dons played host to the San Jose State Spartans and defeated them by a 2-0 margin. San Francisco is 5-3-3 on the season.
Against the Beavers, senior midfielder Annika Schmidt snapped a 0-0 tie in the 68th minute of action when her penalty kick sailed past Oregon State goalkeeper Amy Johnson. Eleven minutes later, sophomore forward Chelsea Hunt was able to provide the insurance marker for the Dons when she tucked her shot just beneath the crossbar off a pass from sophomore forward Shuree Hyatt. Despite a late goal by Oregon State, USF was able to hold and preserve the 2-1 home victory.
Following the game, USF had one day of rest before hosting the Spartans of San Jose State in a Sunday afternoon matinee at Negoesco Stadium. Once again, leading the offense for the Dons was Chelsea Hunt, who scored midway through the first half to put San Francisco up by a 1-0 score. It was Hunt's second consecutive game-winning goal and her third winning marker of the season. The Dons second goal of the game came in the 51st minute, as freshman forward Fiona O'Sullivan was able to connect off a Stephanie Gray pass and record the first goal of her collegiate career. From there, senior goalkeeper Stephanie Beall did the rest as she recorded her third shutout of the season, as she made two saves to preserve the victory. The Dons have allowed just three goals in their last five contests.
The Week Ahead - After playing nine games through the first three weeks of September, the Dons will enjoy a week off, before entering the second half of their season's schedule starting on Friday, October 8 at home against UC Davis (5:00 PM).
Playing the WCC - On Sunday, October 10, USF will commence the WCC portion of their schedule with an afternoon affair at Moraga, CA. against Saint Mary's. Coincidently, this game will mark the Dons first road game in almost a month, as they will have just completed a six game homestand. Seven of the San Francisco's final nine games will be against WCC opponents.
Who's Hot for USF? - Senior Goalkeeper Stephanie Beall has allowed just two goals in her last three games, and has one shutout over that span. Her record on the season is 5-3-3 with three total shutouts. Shuree Hyatt is also playing well of late, as she has recorded points in each of the last two games (2A.)
Leading Scorers - Leading USF in scoring is Chelsea Hunt who has 10 points on the season (5G). Of her five goals, three of have come as game winning goals, which also leads the team. The team leader in assists is junior midfielder Stephanie Gray with 5. Also amongst the team's leading scorers are senior midfielder Annika Schmidt who has 8 points (4G) and sophomore forward Shuree Hyatt who 9 points (3G, 3A) on the season.
Upcoming Milestones - Shuree Hyatt is two goals away from becoming the tenth ranked goal scorer in USF history. She currently has 11 goals in her two-year USF career.
Chelsea Hunt is three goals away from becoming the tenth ranked goal scorer in USF history. She currently has 10 goals in her two-year USF career. Chelsea also has recorded five game winning goals in her career, which means she is one game winning goal away from third place in USF history.
Annika Schmidt is two assists away from 10 on her career, which represents the sixth best in school history. Annika will need four more assists to move into the top 5 assists leaders in school history.
