USF Women Return To Action After One Week Layoff

The Week Ahead - After having a full week off, the USF women's soccer team will return to action with a pair of games this weekend. On Friday, October 8, the Dons (5-3-3) will host the UC Davis Aggies (3-7-1) in their second to last non-conference match. The game will start at 5:00 pm at Negoesco Stadium.

Two days later on Sunday, October 10, San Francisco will begin the WCC portion of their schedule as they travel to Moraga, California to face the Saint Mary's Gaels (8-4-0). Game time for the Sunday match begins at 3:00 pm. Coincidently, this game will mark the Dons first road game in almost a month, as they will have just completed a six game homestand. Seven of the San Francisco's final nine games will be against WCC opponents.

The Following Week - Next week USF will play host to two WCC matches. The first game will take place on Friday, October 15 at 7:00 pm, as USF will be facing San Diego at Negoesco Stadium. Two days later on Sunday, October 19 at 1:00 pm, the Santa Clara Broncos will be in town to face the Dons. Of the seven games left on the Dons schedule, six of those games will come against WCC opponents, with the sole exception of a mid-week game against Hawaii on Tuesday, October 26, at 7:00 pm.

Special Visitor - Before the USF women's soccer team take to the field this upcoming Friday, there will be a special visitor to Negoesco Stadium. At approximately 4:30 pm, Olympic soccer hero Monica Gonzalez, a former WUSA star with the Boston Breakers will be on hand to sign autographs, mingle with team supporters and help raffle off a Team Mexico Olympic jersey, signed by the entire Mexican women's soccer squad. All proceeds from the jersey raffle will be earmarked for the USF women's soccer team.

Player Notes:

Annika Schmidt - Through 10 games this season, Annika has scored 4 goals for a total of 8 points. In her last three games, Schmidt has recorded 2 goals and six shots on net. Schmidt, in the midst of her second season at San Francisco has a career total of seven goals and eight assists in 28 games played. Furthermore, Annika is two assists away from 10 on her career, which represents the sixth best in school history. Annika will need four more assists to move into the top 5 assists leaders in school history.

Chelsea Hunt - Chelsea is in the midst of a breakout 2004 sophomore season. After 11 games, Hunt has scored a team high five goals, which is good enough for first place on USF team scoring. Additionally, Hunt's five goals places here in sixth place overall in WCC scoring.

This season, Chelsea has recorded three game winning goals, two of which occurred in back to back games (vs. SJS on 0/26/04 and vs. Oregon State on 09/24/04). Hunt is one game winning goal away from third place in USF history.

Shuree Hyatt - Is currently in second place amongst USF scoring leaders with nine points (3G, 3A), which sits her one point behind team leader Chelsea Hunt. Over her last eight games, Hyatt has recorded points in six of those games. Moreover, Hyatt is currently ranked ninth in the WCC standing for assists.

Finally, Shuree is two goals away from becoming the tenth ranked goal scorer in USF history. She currently has 11 goals in her two-year USF career and is also two goals away from third place in USF history in the category of game winning goals.

Stephanie Gray - After recording three goals last season with the Dons, junior midfielder Stephanie Gray is back and having another stellar season. Through her first 11 games, Gray has recorded 9 points this season, including a team high five assists. Her five assists is good enough for third place amongst WCC assist leaders.

From the Coaches Corner:

Coaching with Experience - Pamela Kalinoski enters her fourth season as head coach at the University of San Francisco after two years apprenticing for the role in the assistant head coach position. Kalinoski enjoyed a tremendous playing career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, competing on a Tar Heel's team that won four consecutive NCAA women's soccer titles without losing a single match. Advising Pam will be fourth-year assistant coach Allison Gibson, who graduated in 1995 from Sonoma State and third-year goalkeeper coach Jason Werner who graduated from USF in 1996

Coaching Milestone- Head Coach Pamela Kalinoski is in her fourth season as head coach at USF and has compiled an overall record of 27-37-5, which is good enough for second place in total wins for USF women's soccer coaches. The coaching leader in victories at USF for women's soccer is Jean Paul Verhees who compiled an impressive 89-95-12 record in his 10 years at the helm of the USF women's soccer program.

Scouting the Opponents:

UC Davis - Are 3-7-1 so far this season... are 2-2-1 over their last five games... leading scorer is Lindsey Davis who has 14 points (6G, 2A) this season... freshman forward Megan Wall has 10 points this season (3G, 4A), which is good enough for second place on the Aggies points leader board... playing the majority of minutes in goal is junior goalkeeper Krystyn Lizak, as she has played over 750 minutes for UC Davis, compiling a 1-7-0 record... Mary Claire Robinson is in her 13th season as head coach of the UC Davis women's soccer program.

Last Meeting - The last meeting between these two teams occurred way back during the 1994 season, as USF defeated UC Davis by a 1-0 margin.

Overall Matchup - The Aggies lead the overall matchup with 5 wins, versus only two wins for San Francisco. Furthermore, the two teams have tied twice. This week's matchup will be the first for these two teams since the 1994 season.

Saint Mary's - The Gaels are 8-4-0 on the season... SMC will finish off their non-conference schedule against Colorado College on Friday, October 8 before hosting the Dons on Sunday... are coming off a 2-1 loss to #12 Stanford... leading scorer is junior midfielder Genevieve Hollis who has 16 points (7G, 2A) on the season... freshman goalkeeper Andrea Lee has played the majority of minutes in net for SMC, and has an 8-3-0 record on the season... head coach is Paul Sapsford, who is in his second year at Saint Mary's.

Last Meeting - Last season the Dons hosted the Gaels at Negoesco Stadium, but ultimately lost the game by a 1-0 margin. USF lost the match in the 87th minute as defender Jen Belzer was able to score the games only goal past USF goalkeeper Jennifer Orantes.

Overall Matchup - Since 1992, SMC enjoys 8-3-1 head to head advantage over USF. Currently, Saint Mary's is enjoying a six game wining streak over the Dons dating back to the 1998 season. The Dons last victory over the Gaels occurred in 1997, as USF won the game by a 2-1 margin.
