Dons Win Big Against the Aggies
(San Francisco) - Heading into their first conference match of the season this upcoming Sunday, the USF Dons gave themselves a huge confidence boost by crushing the UC Davis Aggies by a 5-0 score at Negoesco Stadium. USF (6-3-3) dominated play from the opening minute as the Aggies (3-8-1) lost for the eighth time this season.Offensively, San Francisco outshot UC Davis by a 19-5 margin, as sophomore forward Shuree Hyatt led the way with four shots on net. Of Shuree's four shots, Hyatt was able to convert on three of them, which represents her first career hatrick at USF. Furthermore, Shuree recorded her third game winning goal of the season, which puts her one game winning goal away from third place in USF history.
Kalinoski was quick to praise her forward tandem of Shuree Hyatt and Chelsea Hunt, "both those girls played so well for us tonight, they were clicking and I'm happy that Shuree got the hatrick, she deserved it."
The Aggies had a glorious opportunity to take the lead in the games fifth minute as UC Davis forward Katie Shesgreen's penalty kick was stopped by the Dons senior goalkeeper Stephanie Beall. After the save, the Aggies could not muster many more offensive opportunities, as Beall recorded her fourth shutout of the season, and the 11th of her USF career.
"Stephanie's save off that penalty kick was huge for us. She's been so solid all season in net, she really deserves a lot of credit." Said USF women's coach Pam Kalinoski.
The real turning point of this game occurred in the 14 minutes following half-time, as USF broke out for four second half goals. Aside from the Hyatt hatrick, senior midfielder Annika Schmidt was able to record her fifth goal of the season, while junior midfielder Stephanie Gray connected on her third goal of the season.
"This was a great all around effort for us. Our team defense was strong and especially deserving of credit are sophomores Kate Nelson and Hilary Fisher, who played exceptionally well on the defensive side of the ball."
USF's next game will occur this Sunday, October 10, as USF travels to Moraga, California to face the St. Mary's Gaels in the Dons first taste of WCC play.
NOTES: Freshman forward Katie Hoban recorded her first point of her collegiate career as she assisted on the goal scored by Stephanie Gray... Sophmore Shuree Hyatt now has 14 goals in her USF career, which is good enough for ninth place in USF all-time goals scored...Furthermore, Hyatt has 35 points in her two years at USF, which places her in 10th place for points scored... With her first assist of the year, senior Annika Schmidt is one assist away from 10 on her career, which will represent the sixth best in school history. Annika will need three more assists to move into the top 5 assists leaders in school history
