Oct. 11, 2001
USF women's soccer continues the 2001 West Coast Conference season on the road when they travel to Santa Clara for a contest against the fourth-ranked Broncos in a 5:30 PM match at Buck Shaw Stadium. San Francisco looks to continue their strong play against Bay Area opponents. In the past week, the Dons fought #6 Cal to a 3-3 deadlock last Sunday and downed the Hornets of Sacramento State on the road last Wednesday.
Junior forward Stacey Caro continues to amaze for USF after scoring her third goal in two matches including the game winner against the Hornets. On the season, Caro has seven goals in her last five matches. Sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Beall collected her third win of the season and second shutout of 2001against the Hornets, recording three saves while facing 10 Sacramento State shots. Jennifer Orantes was equally impressive against Cal, going 120 minutes, allowing three goals on 15 shots and made seven saves. Orantes figures to get the start against the Broncos as USF continues to alternate keepers.
San Francisco faces a stiff challenge in the #4 Broncos. Last season at Negoesco Stadium, USF nearly upset Santa Clara before bowing 3-2 in double-overtime. Junior forward Meghan Daly and sophomore forward Rebecca Shook each tallied for USF against the Broncos last season. San Francisco still seeks their first victory against Santa Clara. The Broncos own a 17-0 advantage in the all-time series.
Santa Clara enters their league opener with a 9-1-0 overall record, and have won their last five games by a combined score of 18-5. Junior Aly Wagner leads the WCC in points (27), goals (9) and assists (9), and has moved into the 19th place all-time in the WCC for career points, having scored 73 points in only 49 games.
