USF Women Make the Grade
Oct. 13, 2004
A great season is getting even better for the USF women's soccer team. After reeling off four straight wins and building an impressive 7-3-3: 1-0-0 WCC season record, the USF Dons have been recognized by soccerbuzz.com as the 14th ranked team in the west region. The last time USF women's soccer was ranked occurred during the 2001 season.
Head Coach Pamela Kalinoski was pleased with the news, but remained focused on the remainder of the season, "this is a great accomplishment for our team and it is a step in the right direction. I hope the team will continue to build on our early season success."
Much of the success USF is enjoying this year can be attributed to their excellent team defense. So far this season the Dons have shutout their opponents five times and have currently shutout their opposition in three straight games. Furthermore, the Dons have been able to produce a balanced offensive attack that is led by the sophomore forward combo of Shuree Hyatt (15 points) and Chelsea Hunt (14 points).
Of USF's six remaining WCC games, three opponents are nationally ranked, including #4 Portland, #15 Santa Clara and # 21 Pepperdine. Additionally, WCC rivals Loyola Marymount and San Diego are also ranked in the west region.
"While it's nice to get the recognition. We must take each game as it comes, and we can not afford to take anything for granted. Our ultimate goal is to reach the NCAA tournament and that is where our focus must be." Said Kalinoski.
The Dons will continue their playoff push with a WCC matchup as they will host the University of San Diego Toreros on Friday, October 15 at 7:00 pm at Negoesco Stadium. Two days later, USF will host the Santa Clara Broncos at 1:00 pm also at Negoesco Stadium.
