Women's Soccer Host Santa Clara and San Diego This Weekend

Complete Release in PDF Format THIS WEEK FOR THE DONS: Women's soccer will play host to No. 20 Santa Clara and San Diego at Negoesco this weekend, as part of a men's and women's double-header weekend. Kick off versus SCU is set for 5:00 PM on Friday, and game time against No. 25 San Diego is 11:00 AM on Sunday. NEXT UP FOR USF: The Dons return to the Northwest next weekend, heading to Spokane, WA for a 3:00 PM Friday (10/23) match with Gonzaga, then going to Portland, OR for a noon meeting with the Pilots on Sunday (10/25). DONS RANKED 10TH IN WEST: San Francisco women's soccer is now ranked 10th in the Western Region, as announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The last time the program was ranked was 2002, after a 7-1-1 start.Through 12 games this year, USF is 6-1-5, and most recently defeated West Coast Conference foe Saint Mary's 2-1 in overtime at Negoesco Stadium (10/11/09). The Dons have outscored their opponents 18-7 so far, passed their wins total from last year (5), and nearly doubled their offensive output (10 total goals in 2008). USF UNBEATEN IN LAST EIGHT GAMES: San Francisco women's soccer remained undefeated in its last eight games (three wins and five ties from 9/6-10/11). The 2009 team now owns the second most consecutive unbeaten matches, behind the 1994 squad that won 11 consecutive games. Molly Hall SCORES TWICE; GIVING DONS 2-1 WIN OVER SMC: Sophomore forward Molly Hall busted out of her scoring drought, scoring twice against Saint Mary's (10/11) to give the Dons a 2-1 win in West Coast Conference action. Kristina Hall LEADS DONS SCORERS: Senior midfielder Kristina Hall has been aggressive in the early going, scoring four of the Dons 12 goals. She scored in the Dons first game of the season, helping USF to a 2-0 win against San Francisco State (8/21). Hall then scored twice in a 4-0 drubbing of Academy of Art (8/30). Her final goal so far came in the 3-0 win over Fairfield in the USF odwalla/Nike Classic (9/6). DONS OFFENSE: USF has 18 goals midway through the season, six more then they had all of 2008. Freshman forward Megan Connor (AAU 8/30, Pacific 9/20, EWU 9/25) is second on the team with three. Junior midfielder Lauren Maris (one vs. AAU on 9/30 and one vs. Fairfield on 9/6), sophomore forward Molly Hall (two vs. SMC 10/11), and freshman forward Laura Gordon (game winner vs. Marist on 8/28 and one vs. Fairfield on 9/6) each have two scoring strikes for USF. Five Dons have also scored their first ever collegiate goals in 2009 including, junior defender Ashley O'Brien (EWU 9/25), sophomore midfielder Megan Bucci (Marist 8/28), sophomore midfielder Keonna Robinson (CS Fullerton 9/13), freshman midfielder Camile Cholger (SF State 8/21), and freshman midfielder Aly Drake (SU 9/27). WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM THEIR FRIENDS: Nine Dons have helped out their teammates in 2009. Senior Kristina Hall, sophomores Keonna Robinson and Kelli Woodard, freshmen Laura Gordon, Ashlyn Mazur, and Megan Connor each have one assist this season. Sophomore forwards Megan Bucci and Molly Hall, and junior midfielder Lauren Maris lead the assist category with two each. WEEK EIGHT OPPONENT CAPSULES
SANTA CLARA BRONCOS A LOOK AT SANTA CLARA: The Santa Clara women's soccer team will look to rebound in 2009 after posting the program's first under-500 season (4-12-4) since 1983. The Broncos' competition will surely test them throughout the season as head coach Jerry Smith, who enters his 23rd season at the helm of Santa Clara women's soccer, compiled a schedule that is once again among the toughest in the nation. In 2009, the 20th ranked Broncos are 8-5-1 overall, but fell to San Diego 1-0 in their WCC opener. Senior Jordan Angeli leads the team with four goals, two assists, and 10 points.
SAN DIEGO TOREROS A LOOK AT SAN DIEGO: San Diego returned eight starters including 21 letterwinners overall from last year's squad that posted a 15-5-3 overall record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Toreros, who posted a program-best 6-1 WCC record last season, will be led by 2008 All-WCC first team member Jackie Zinke, who was also named to the preseason all-conference team, and Natalie Garcia, Elissa Magracia, and Stephanie Ochs, all of whom were named to the 2008 All-WCC freshman team. The No. 25 ranked Toreros are led by junior Jackie Zinke (three goals, six points), and freshman Erica Peeples (three goals, six points).
