USF Women's Soccer Enters First Full Week of West Coast Conference Play, Traveling to No. 18 San Diego and Santa Clara

THIS WEEK FOR THE DONS: USF begins its first full week of West Coast Conference play, traveling to No. 18 San Diego on Friday and Santa Clara on Sunday. Last season, the Dons fell to San Diego 3-0 to close out the season (11/10/07). USF fell to Santa Clara 1-0 last year (11/4/07).

NEXT UP FOR USF: The Dons welcome conference foes Gonzaga and Portland next weekend at Negoesco Stadium. Friday's (10/24) contest against Gonzaga will begin at 5:00 PM, with Sunday's (10/26) match versus Portland is set for 1:00 PM.

Nicole Moore LEADS THE DONS: Freshman forward Nicole Moore is leading the Dons offense this season. The Clearfield, UT native has four goals and eight points. Her first collegiate goal came in a 1-0 shutout over Tennessee-Martin in the Pacific Fall Classic (9/12). She then scored both goals in the 2-1 win over San Jose State (9/18). In last week's game against Cal State Bakersfield, she scored her third game winner of the year, helping the Dons to a 2-0 victory at Negoesco Stadium (10/5).

FRESHMEN MAKING AN IMPACT: Through 14 games this season, the incoming freshmen have been making quite an impact, with 13 of the 14 already seeing significant playing time. Four of them have already recorded their first collegiate goals, three of which were also game winners. Forward Kelli Woodard earned the win for USF with a shot against Northern Colorado (W 1-0, 8/29). She also had the assist in USF's 1-0 season opening win over Fresno State (8/22). Woodard is tied for first with two assists. Defender Kallie Caldwell kept the Dons from being shutout with a goal in the 84th minute of a double overtime tie at Northridge (9/28). Defender Lauren Abarca is tied for first in assists with two, both in the 2-1 win over San Jose State (9/18). Defender Abbey Kaufman earned her first assist in the 2-0 shutout of CSUB (10/5). Forward Molly Hall earned her first goal, keeping the Dons from being shutout in a 2-1 loss against Seattle University (10/10).

RETURNERS DOING THEIR JOB: USF veterans are doing their job on the field, especially senior midfielder Katherine Kimure and junior forward Kristina Hall. Kimure scored the Dons first goal of the year, a game winner in the 1-0 victory over Fresno State (8/22). Hall scored a goal in the 4-1 loss to Colorado that prevented the Dons from being shutout on the road (8/31). She also added an assist in the 1-1 double overtime tie at Northridge (9/28), and at home in the 2-0 win over CSUB (10/5). Sophomore forward Keonna Robinson also got in on the action, adding an assist to freshman Kelli Woodard's goal against Northern Colorado (8/29). Senior forward Alexis Mielke added her first goal of the season in the 2-0 win over Bakersfield (10/5). Sophomore defender Lauren Maris earned her first assist of the season in the 2-1 loss to Seattle University (10/10)

Kelly Pohle IN GOAL: Junior goalkeeper Kelly Pohle is having a great year in between the posts. She leads the team in nearly every goalkeeping category, including saves (58), minutes (906:23), wins (4), and shutouts (2).

USF DOUBLES LAST SEASON'S WIN TOTAL: With five victories on the season, the Dons have more than doubled their 2007 win2 total of two.

DONS AMONG THE WCC LEADERS: Four Dons are among the top 10 in the West Coast Conference in nine categories. Junior goalkeeper Kelly Pohle leads the way with four, including first in saves per game (5.27), tied for third in saves (58), seventh in goals against average (1.39), and tied for seventh in shutouts (2). Also in goal, senior Anika Steig is ninth with 13 saves. Freshman forward Nicole Moore is tied for third with three game winning goals, tied for sixth with four goals, and tied for tenth with 0.29 goals per game. Senior midfielder Katherine Kimure is tied for fourth in both shots (41) and shots per game (2.93). As a team, USF is first with 77 saves.

A LOOK AT SANTA CLARA: After opening the season with two consecutive wins the Broncos, who were chosen to finish second in conference, have underacheived this season. At 3-9-2, 0-1-0 WCC, the Broncos are currently sitting in last place. SCU has just nine goals to opponents 14 this year. Leading the way for the Broncos is sophomore midfielder Kendra Perry, who has three goals and six points. Senior goalie Megan McCray leads the stoppers with 22 saves and 550:58 minutes. Head coach Jerry Smith in 341-99-32 in his 22 years at the helm for the Broncos.
