USF to Play Two Games This Week

The Week Ahead - USF (8-6-3; 2-3-0 WCC) will play two games this week, the first occurs on Tuesday, October 26, at 7:00 pm, as the Rainbow Wahine of Hawaii (12-5-2; 5-3 WAC) travel to San Francisco to face the San Francisco Dons. For USF, Tuesdays match represents their first non-conference action in their last five games.
Five days later on Saturday, October 30, at 7:00 pm, USF will travel to Portland, Oregon to face number #4 Portland (15-3-0; 4-1-0 WCC) at Merlo Field. This is the second last game of the regular season for San Francisco.
In the West Coast Conference - USF is currently tied with Gonzaga for fifth place in the conference. Both teams sport a 2-3-0 WCC record. Tied for first place are USD, Portland and Santa Clara, as all three teams share an identical 4-1-0 record. Alone in fourth place in the conference is Loyola Marymount, which has a 2-2-1 WCC record. Behind USF in seventh spot is Pepperdine at 1-3-1, while Saint Mary's is in last place with an 0-5-0 record.
The Week that Was - USF split a pair of games over the weekend as they lost to Loyola Marymount by a 3-0 score on Friday night. In that game, Loyola Marymount scored two goals in the first half and added another late in the second half to post a dominating 3-0 shutout over San Francisco. The Dons were out shot 11-5 in the game
Two days later, on Sunday, October 24, USF was able to bounce back and defeat 20th ranked Pepperdine by a 2-1 score. The game featured an impressive San Francisco comeback after they fell behind the Wave 1-0 in the first half. In the second half, the Dons were sparked by freshman forward Lauren Tweet, as she recorded the first three points of her collegiate career. The first point came on a game-tying assist off of a Shuree Hyatt header in the 63rd minute. 15 minutes later at the 78 minute mark, Tweet was able to hoist a shot beyond the reach of the Waves goalkeeper and give San Francisco a 2-1 lead. From there, the Dons defense coupled with some timely saves by senior goalkeeper Stephanie Beall was enough to preserve the Dons victory.
The Following Week - USF will play their season finale on Saturday, November 6 as they complete their WCC schedule with a home game against Gonzaga at 1:00 pm at Negoesco Stadium. This game will loom large as playoff positioning could be at stake.
Player Notes:
Chelsea Hunt - After 17 games Chelsea has scored seven goals, which is good enough for a first place tie in goals scored with teammate Shuree Hyatt. Her 17 points on the season also puts her in first place tie for team scoring. Furthermore, Chelsea is in sixth place amongst WCC scoring leaders.
This season Chelsea has recorded four game winning goals, which gives her six game winners through her two-year USF career. Hunt is now tied for third in USF history in that category. Hunt is two game winning goals away from second place all-time in USF women's soccer history.
Shuree Hyatt - Is currently in a first place tie with Chelsea Hunt in team scoring with 17 points (7G, 3A). Hyatt recorded her first collegiate hatrick in a game against UC Davis on October 10.
Amongst the WCC leaders, Shuree's seven goals places her in fourth spot in the WCC, while her 17 total points is good enough for sixth place in the individual scoring category in the WCC.
In regards to the USF record books, Shuree's 15 goals scored in her two years at San Francisco, places her eighth spot all-time amongst USF goal scorers, one goal away from the seventh spot in that list. Furthermore, Shuree is now one game winning goal away from entering 3rd place in that category.
Annika Schmdit - Through 16 games this season, Annika has scored five goals and two assists for a total of 12 points. Schmidt, in the midst of her second season at San Francisco has a career total of eight goals and 10 assists in 30 games played. Furthermore, Annika has 10 assists for her career, which represents the sixth best in school history. Annika will need four more assists to move into the top five assists leaders in school history.
Lauren Tweet - Tweet recorded her first three points (1G, 1A) of her collegiate career on Sunday afternoon. Her assist off of a Shuree Hyatt header tied the score against Pepperdine, while her goal was the game winner as USF defeated Pepperdine 2-1.
From the Coaches Corner:
Coaching with Experience - Pamela Kalinoski is in her fourth season as head coach at the University of San Francisco after two years apprenticing for the role in the assistant head coach position. Kalinoski enjoyed a tremendous playing career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, competing on a Tar Heel's team that won four consecutive NCAA women's soccer titles without losing a single match. Advising Pam will be fourth-year assistant coach Allison Gibson, who graduated in 1995 from Sonoma State and third-year goalkeeper coach Jason Werner who graduated from USF in 1996
Coaching Milestone - Over her four years as head coach at USF, Pamela Kalinoski has compiled an overall record of 30-40-5, which is good enough for second place in total wins for USF women's soccer coaches. The coaching leader in victories at USF for women's soccer is Jean Paul Verhees who compiled an impressive 89-95-12 record in his 10 years at the helm of the USF women's soccer program.
Scouting the Opponents:
Hawaii - Are 12-5-2 overall and 5-3-0 in WAC action... are 1-1 on their current three game road swing... defeated San Jose State 1-0 in overtime on Sunday... game against the Dons is their last game of the regular season... leading scorer is junior Natasha Kai who has 29 points (12G, 5A) on the season... in 2003 Kai was selected by the Soccer Buzz as a third team All-American...and was a first team all-WAC selection in 2003... goalkeeping duties are roughly split between Mahie Atay and Erin Chow... head coach is Pinsoom Tenzing who has guided the Rainbow Wahine to a 92-99-15 overall record in his 11 years as head coach.
Last Meeting - These two teams last met in 2003 as USF defeated Hawaii by a 3-2 score in Manoa. Lyz Sylva scored the game wining goal for the Dons in the 89th minute.
Since 1985 - USF has played Hawaii six times since 1985 and has compiled a 4-0-2 record over that span.
Portland - Are 15-3-0 on the season, and 4-1-0 in WCC action... Are ranked fourth in the nation according to soccerbuzz.com... were on a seven game winning streak before losing to Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon 1-0... are tied for first in the WCC with USD and Santa Clara, all at 4-1-0... leading scorer is junior Christine Sinclair from Burnaby, B.C. with 43 points (17G, 9A)... Sinclair is a member of the Canadian Women's national team... Sophomore goalkeeper Cori Alexander has played the majority of minutes in goal, as she has compiled a 13-3 record with seven shutouts... head coach is Garett Smith who is also the associate director of the soccer program at the University of Portland.
Last Meeting - Last season, USF lost to #5 Portland 8-0 in Portland.
Since 1992 - Portland has defeated the Dons in 11 straight games. USF last scored a goal against the Pilots in 1999, when they scored one goal in a 6-1 loss to the Pilots.
