USF Travels to Los Angeles to take on Loyola Marymount

Oct. 27, 2003

UNIVERSITY OF SAN FRANCISCO WOMEN'S SOCCER

November 2nd vs. Loyola Marymount @ 1:00 PM Sullivan Field/ Los Angeles, CA.

USF LOSES TWO TOUGH WCC MATCHES AT HOME THIS WEEKEND: The Dons (5-12-0, 1-4-0 WCC) may not have beaten #12 Santa Clara or San Diego this weekend, but they definitely turned some heads and made teams take notice. In the first of the two-game weekend, the Dons hosted Santa Clara losing a hard fought battle, 2-1. Down 1-0 in the second half USF scored to tie the game on a goal from freshman forward Shuree Hyatt, only to have Santa Clara score the eventual game-winning goal at the 66:13 mark. From the onset, the action on the field was very physical. The two teams combined for a total of 35 fouls in the game. It was evident from the start that the Dons were going to try and play physical with the Broncos defensively and make them earn whatever they could get. Santa Clara got on the board first, getting a goal from Leslie Osbourne in the 9th minute for the only goal of the period for either team. Santa Clara out shot the Dons 13-6 in the first half. The Dons had a great opportunity to tie the game in the 20th minute, when on a free kick, junior midfielder Annika Schmidt hit the cross bar. In the 55th minute, Hyatt showed some superb ball-handling skills when she took the ball from midfield and streaked past a pack of defenders and sent a shot into the left corner of the goal, tying the game at 1-1. It was Hyatt's team leading eighth goal of the season. The Broncos would take the lead for the final time in the 64th minute when forward Tina Estrada headed in a pass that came off of a free kick. On Sunday, the Dons played their second game of the two-game home stand, falling to the University of San Diego, 2-0. San Diego scored their two goals within ten minute of one another, and USF was unable to rally late. The action in the first half was mainly a defensive struggle, as both teams combined for a total of seven shots in the period. San Diego would score first in the second half when a long pass from senior forward Katie Allen was deflected in off the head of senior Marie Claude-Henry at the 67:52 mark. At that point, the Dons did try and put together a solid offensive push. Freshman forward Shuree Hyatt narrowly missed tying the game with a header that just went over the cross bar. With the score still at 1-0, San Diego Sophomore forward Lee Ann Klopscinski fired at USF goaltender Jennifer Orantes, who made the save, but the rebound found its way right back to Klopscinski. She put away the rebound and gave the Toreros the 2-0 lead.

DONS TRAVEL TO LOS ANGELES TO TAKE ON LOYOLA MARYMOUNT: USF will head down south this weekend for one game as they will take on the Loyola Marymount (7-5-3, 0-5-0 WCC) Saturday at 1:00 pm. The Lions dropped back-to-back conference games this weekend, losing to Gonzaga 4-0 on Friday and losing to #3 Portland Sunday. In Friday's 4-0 loss to the Zags, it was due to a lack of opportunity. LMU out shot Gonzaga a whopping 26-6. In the second half LMU fired off 18 shots, compared to three to the Zags. On Sunday, it was a different story for LMU. They were matching #3 ranked Portland stride for stride for 74 minutes. It was at that point that an own goal broke the scoreless tie in favor of Portland, leading to the 1-0 loss. The road won't get any easier for the Lions this week as they head to Westwood to take on #2 UCLA on Wednesday, October 29th.

SCOUTING LOYOLA MARYMOUNT: Loyola Marymount has been one of the more unlucky teams in the WCC this season. In conference play, they have taken 52 shots, good for fourth in the league. The only problem is they have only one goal to show for their efforts. On the season, they have been led offensively by 2002 second-team All-WCC performer Shari Nishikawa. Nishikawa has four goals and two assists on the season, good for 10 points. Kelly Lewandowski has also scored four goals to go along with one assist for nine points. 2002 first-team All-WCC player Laura Trask has two goals and three assists this season. In goal, Kelly Yukihiro has played every minute for the Lions this season. She has a record of 7-7-3 and has made 69 saves the season. In the series, LMU leads 4-5-1 overall, but the Lions have taken the last five matches.

Annika Schmidt AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS IN MOST OFFENSIVE CATEGORIES: Annika Schmidt continues to be one of the more dominant players in the West Coast Conference. She is second in the conference with assists (8) and assists per game average (0.47) and sixth in shots (36) averaging 2.12 a game. Schmidt is also tied for eighth in points (14). Against Gonzaga (10/17) Schmidt had one goal, leading the Dons to a 2-1 victory. Schmidt was named co-West Coast Conference player of the week for the week of 8/25 -8/31.

THE DONS RANK HIGH IN CONFERENCE TEAM STATISTICS: The Dons are ranked high in many of the WCC statistical categories. The Dons are fourth in the league in shots (224, points (75), goals (28), and goals per game (1.65) behind only Santa Clara, Pepperdine, and Portland and are third in corner kicks (80) behind Santa Clara and Portland. With 83 saves, the Dons are in second place in the conference behind Gonzaga.

DONS AMONG THE LEADERS IN INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS: Several Dons players are near the top of the leader board in key statistics. Freshman forward Shuree Hyatt is currently in fourth place in points (20) and goals (8), goals per game average (0.47), and fifth in points per game average (1.18) and shots (37). Freshman midfielder Chelsea Hunt is second in the conference in shots (50) and is sixth in the conference in goals (5). Senior goaltender Jen Orantes ranks second in the conference in saves (76).

SCHMIDT CLOSING IN ON THE ALL-TIME ASSISTS TOP FIVE: 17 games into her first season on the Hilltop, junior Annika Schmidt is already closing in on the top five in career assists. Presently, Schmidt has eight assists. The fifth spots all time are held by Kishandee Green (1995-98) and Jannik Abel (1994), each with 10 assists for their career.

Chelsea Hunt RECORDS THE FIRST USF HAT TRICK IN NINE SEASONS: Chelsea Hunt's hat trick on September 26th was the first for USF women's soccer since former Dons stand out Kelli Bryant performed the feat back on October 7th, 1994 in a 7-0 shut out of San Diego. Hunt began the game with two goals on the season and finished the game with five and in a fourth place tie for the league lead.

IF IT'S A WIN, IT MUST BE A SHUTOUT!: So far this season four of the Dons five wins have been shutouts. The all-time USF record for shutouts in a season is 10, which was done in 1994. That season the Dons went 12-6-1, the best season in USF Dons Women's Soccer history.
