USF To Host #21 Pepperdine in 2003 Season Finale

USF SEASON FINALE SATURDAY AT HOME AGAINST #21 PEPPERDINE

USF LOSES TO LOYOLA MARYMOUNT: USF women's soccer suffered a 4-0 shutout at Loyola Marymount in West Coast Conference action Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Field in Los Angeles. San Francisco (5-13, 1-6 WCC) managed just six shots in the contest, while the Lions (8-8-3, 1-5 WCC) fired 20 shots on the way to snapping a six-match losing skid. LMU scored on their first two shots of the contest to end a 360 minute scoreless streak and had a 2-0 lead after the first eight minutes. The Lions added a pair in the second half. Junior midfielder Annika Schmidt and freshman forward Chelsea Hunt each recorded a pair of shots for San Francisco, while freshman forward Wendy Hugo and sophomore forward Liz Sylva each added one apiece. Senior goalkeeper Jen Orantes (5-13) took the loss for the Dons, allowing four goals off 20 shots and made five saves.

DONS TO HOST #20 PEPPERDINE IN THE SEASON FINALE: USF will take on the #20 ranked Pepperdine Waves (12-5-1, 2-3-1 WCC) on Saturday in their last match of the 2003 season. The 2003 senior class will be honored before the match. In their last match, Pepperdine played Saint Mary's to a 1-1 tie. Down 1-0 at the 59:09 mark, senior forward Lacey Ubaldi scored her ninth goal of the season to tie the score at 1-1 and that is how the match would end. Pepperdine held a 21-9 shot advantage in the match. Saturday's match will mark the 11th meeting between the two programs and the series is tied 5-5. In last season's match, Pepperdine rallied in the second half to post a 2-1 victory.

SCOUTING PEPPERDINE: Pepperdine has been led this season offensively by senior 2002 second team All-WCC Lacey Ubaldi. On the season, Ubaldi has nine goals, good for second in the WCC, and 22 points, fourth in the conference. Ubaldi has also chipped in with six assists. Freshman Jennifer Brewer is the second-leading goal scorer for the waves with seven. Sophomore Megan Woods also has five goals and six assists on the season, good for 16 points, second behind Ubaldi for the team lead. In goal, the Waves look to sophomore Anna Picarelli. On the season, Picarelli has posted a 12-5-1 record, with a 2-3-1 record in conference play. With 74 saves and a 0.90 G.A.A. on the season, Picarelli is in the third place in the conference list in both statistics. Pepperdine has out shot its opponents this season 258-179, and has outscored their opponent 35-16 on the year. In conference play, the Waves have been outscored 6-10.

Annika Schmidt AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS IN MOST OFFENSIVE CATEGORIES: Annika Schmidt continues to be one of the more dominant players in the West Coast Conference. She is second in the conference with assists (8) and assists per game average (0.44) and seventh in shots (38) averaging 2.11 a game. Schmidt is also tied for ninth in points (14). Against Gonzaga (10/17) Schmidt had one goal, leading the Dons to a 2-1 victory. Schmidt was named co-West Coast Conference player of the week for the week of 8/25 -8/31.

THE DONS RANK HIGH IN CONFERENCE TEAM STATISTICS: The Dons are ranked high in many of the WCC statistical categories. The Dons are fifth in the league in shots (230), points (75), goals (28), and goals per game (1.56) behind only Santa Clara, Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount and. With 83 saves, the Dons are in third place in the conference behind Gonzaga and Saint Mary's.

DONS AMONG THE LEADERS IN INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS: Several Dons players are near the top of the leader board in key statistics. Freshman forward Shuree Hyatt is currently in fifth place in points (20) fourth in goals (8), goals per game average (0.44), and sixth in points per game average (1.11) and eighth in shots (37). Freshman midfielder Chelsea Hunt is second in the conference in shots (52) and is seventh in the conference in goals (5). Senior goaltender Jen Orantes ranks second in the conference in saves (81) and third in saves per game (4.50).

SCHMIDT CLOSING IN ON THE ALL-TIME ASSISTS TOP FIVE: 18 games into her first season on the Hilltop, junior Annika Schmidt is already closing in on the top five in career assists. Presently, Schmidt has eight assists. The fifth spots all time are held by Kishandee Green (1995-98) and Jannik Abel (1994), each with 10 assists for their career.

Chelsea Hunt RECORDS THE FIRST USF HAT TRICK IN NINE SEASONS: Chelsea Hunt's hat trick on September 26th was the first for USF women's soccer since former Dons stand out Kelli Bryant performed the feat back on October 7th, 1994 in a 7-0 shut out of San Diego. Hunt began the game with two goals on the season and finished the game with five and in a fourth place tie for the league lead.

IF IT'S A WIN, IT MUST BE A SHUTOUT!: So far this season four of the Dons five wins have been shutouts. The all-time USF record for shutouts in a season is 10, which was done in 1994. That season the Dons went 12-6-1, the best season in USF Dons Women's Soccer history.
