Dons Defeat WCC Foe Santa Clara, 5-2

SAN FRANCISCO - Down 1-0 after doubles action, San Francisco won five of the six singles' matches in to take a 5-2 decision versus Santa Clara Friday afternoon at Golden Gate Park.

With the win USF improves to 3-3 on the year, 2-0 versus WCC opponents. The Dons defeated Portland 4-3 on January 26.

Jennifer Heinser, who is now 6-0 in dual competition this year, dominated SCU's Myra Davoudi in a 6-1, 6-1 final. At No. 2, Mylene Martin surpassed Stephanie Galainena by a slight margin, 7-6, in set one then came back strong with a 6-1 second set. No. 4 player Jenny Sperry followed a similar pattern versus Ashley Pane winning 7-6, 6-2. Cecilia Gratian at No. 3 and Jessy Mekpoh at No. 6 were also winners with 6-4, 6-3 and 6-0, 6-3 finals, respectively.

The Broncos' lone win in singles came at No. 5 as Carmen Pham out played USF's Sarah Oudomvilay 6-2, 7-6.

Santa Clara won the doubles point winning two of the three matches despite the Dons' No. 1 doubles pair of Heinser and Gratian opening play with an 8-4 topping of the Broncos' Pane and Galainena.

USF will play WCC and Bay Area foe Saint Mary's in Moraga, Calif., on Februrary 22. The dual is slated to begin at 3 p.m. PT.
