Women's Tennis Defeats Conference Foe Gonzaga 6-1

(San Francisco, CA) - USF women's tennis defeated West Coast Conference foe Gonzaga 6-1 at Golden Gate Park on Sunday afternoon. The Dons (6-7) earned all three doubles wins and took five of six singles matches.
In doubles play, junior Jennifer-Lee Heinser and freshman Melinda Akerbrant took an 8-2 win over Rika Mehndiratta and Danielle Farmer. At No. 2 doubles, junior Cecilia Gratian and sophomore Julia Wartenburger earned the 8-3 victory over Clare Dodge and Kristina Zauere. Closing out the doubles matches, freshman Yurie Hashiguchi and sophomore Alana McMahon defeated Jackie Tabb and Sophie Lantta 8-6.
In singles play, Heinser earned her team leading 10th win, defeating Mehndiratta in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2, Wartenburger took a 7-6 (4), 7-5 victory from Zauere, while Gratian defeated Farmer 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3. McMahon earned the 6-3, 6-2 win over Lantta at No. 5, and Hashiguchi won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 over Tabb at the No. 6 position. Akerbrant put up a fight at No. 4, but fell to Prudence Teitzel 1-6, 6-3, 10-6.
USF returns to the court this weekend for a three day tournament in San Diego. The Dons first meet Portland on Thursday.
