Women's Tennis Defeats Northern Iowa 5-2

(San Francisco, CA) - USF women's tennis earned its 10th win of the year, defeating Northern Iowa 5-2 at Golden Gate Park on Wednesday afternoon.
USF took the doubles point, taking two of three matches. The No. 1 team of junior Jennifer-Lee Heinser and freshman Melinda Akerbrant defeated Talia Jang-Stewart and Laia Gonzalez-Garrido 8-3, and the No. 3 team of sophomore Alana McMahon and freshman Yurie Hashiguchi took an 8-6 win over Stefannia Sampaio and Phoebe Walker. Junior Cecilia Gratian and sophomore Julia Wartenburger fought hard at No. 2, but fell to Jessica Kunzelmann and Sampada Kanade 8-7(7).
In singles, the Dons won at Nos. 1, 2, 5, and 6. No. 65 Heinser earned her 14th win on the year, sweeping Walker 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2, Wartenburger defeated Gonzalez-Garrido 6-4, 6-1. McMahon earned the win at No. 5, taking a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sampaio, and Hashiguchi defeated Katy Delagardelle 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6. Gratian played tough at No. 3, falling to Kanade 0-6, 6-4, 10-8, and Akerbrant dropped the match at No. 4, 6-2, 7-6(3) to Kunzelmann.
USF has a bit of a break, with the Dons not hitting the courts again until April 4 when they host Cal State Northridge at the Cal Tennis Club. Match is set to begin at 2:00 PM.
