(San Diego, CA) - In round one of the 2009 West Coast Conference Women's Tennis Championships, the No. 4 seeded Dons earned a 4-2 victory over No. 5 seed Loyola Marymount on Friday afternoon at Barnes Tennis Center on the campus of the University of San Diego. USF will meet No. 1 seed Pepperdine in a semi-final match at 11:30 AM tomorrow. Pepperdine defeated No. 8 seed Gonzaga 4-0 in their match today.

After seniors Sarah Oudomvilay and Mylene Martin fell 8-4 to LMU's senior Tina Razloznik and sophomore Shauna Morgan at No. 3 doubles, USF sophomores Jennifer-Lee Heinser and Cecilia Gratian tied it up with an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles over juniors Jane Pringle and Bliss Nixon. But dropped freshmen Julia Wartenburger and Alana McMahon dropped an 8-6 decision to sophomore Jasmin Heckel and freshman Elisaveta Pironkova at No. 2 doubles to give the doubles point to the Lions.

USF, however, would come back in singles play to earn the 4-2 victory. No. 59 Heinser earned the first singles win of the day, defeating Razloznik 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1. Wartenburger earned the straight set victory over Pironkova 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3, and Gratian took a 7-5, 7-5 win from Morgan at No. 5 to put the Dons up 3-1.

Pringle earned the only singles win for the Lions at No. 4, defeating sophomore Jessy Mekpoh in three sets 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 to bring LMU to within one at 3-2. But Martin closed out the win for the Dons with a three set victory over Heckel 1-6, 6-2, 6-4.
