USF Women's Tennis Opens Fall Season at Cal

(Berkeley, CA) - To open up fall play, San Francisco women's tennis competed in the Cal/Nike Invitational in Berkeley this weekend.
Friday (10/2/09): In ITA `B' singles first round (32) Dons freshman Melinda Akerbrant earned the only USF win of the round, defeating Sacramento State's Milica Zivanovic 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to move on to the second round. Sophomore Andrea Gaitan fell to Cal's Annie Goransson 6-0, 6-0, sophomore Julia Wartenburger dropped a 6-2, 0-6, 6-2 decision to Saint Mary's Molly Aloia, junior Jessy Mekpoh fell 6-0, 6-1 to Cal's Tayler Davis, junior Cecilia Gratian dropped a 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-3 decision to Saint Mary's Alisa Spitzer, and sophomore Alana McMahon fell to USC's Lyndsay Kinstler 6-3, 6-1.
In ITA `B' Singles Round of 16, Akerbrant dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to BYU's Chie Hayasaka. In the consolation first round, Wartenburger and Gratian took wins for USF. Wartenburger defeated Pacific's Kateryna Nezhura 7-5, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (10-4), and Gratian defeated BYU's Romina Nedakovic 4-6, 7-6 (3), 1-0 (10-8). Gaitan dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to SCU's Isabelle Hoy, Mekpoh fell to SCU's Kimi Cox 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7), and McMahon dropped a 7-6 (3), 0-6, 1-0 (10-6) match to Nevada's Aodhnait Lombard.
In `B' doubles action, freshman Blaire Reed and Mekpoh earned an 8-6 win over BYU's Andie Young and Elizaveta Ezhova, but Fresno State's Anna Mikhaylove and Bianca Modoc defeated Wartenburger and Akerbrant 8-0.
Reed dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Long Beach State's Julie Luzar in `C' singles. In `C' doubles, Gratian, playing with Nevada's Aodhnait Lombard, defeated Pacific's Kateryna Nezhura and Olga Gumenyuk 8-4, but Cal's Catie Visico and SCU's Mary Chamaki took an 8-4 victory over McMahon and Gaitan.
Saturday: In `B' singles consolations quarterfinals, Wartenburger fell to SCU's Isabelle Hoy 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (5) and Gratian had to pull out due to injury. In `B' doubles quarterfinal round, Cal's Kasia Siwosz and Tayler Davis defeated Reed and Mekpoh 8-0. Then in the `B' doubles consolation quarterfinals, Wartenburger and Aderbrant dropped an 8-4 decision to Davis' Dahra Zamudio and Herzyl Legaspi.
In `C' Singles consolations semi-final, Reed earned a victory after her opponent, SCU's Mary Chgamaki pulled out due to illness. To close out the day in singles consolation round robin, Mekpoh dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Nevada's Lais Ogata, Gaitan fell to Cal's Catie Visico 6-3, 6-0, and Long Beach State's Jaklin Alawi defeated McMahon 6-4, 6-2.
