Dons Compete in ITA Regional Tournament

(Palo Alto, CA) – San Francisco women’s tennis competed in the 2009 Northwest ITA Regional, held on the Stanford campus over the weekend. The Dons earned eight wins in the event, with junior Cecilia Gratian leading USF to a round of 32 appearance. In singles Round of 128, sophomore Julia Wartenburger defeated Davis’ Lauren Curry 6-2, 6-3, Gratian earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Cal Poly’s Jocelyn Davis, and freshman Blair Reed took out Eastern Washington’s Jody Liening 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. In singles Round of 64, Gratian defeated Washington’s Vanja Radunovic 6-2, 6-1. USF also earned wins in consolation singles. Freshman Melinda Akerbrant defeated Eastern Washington’s Kelsey Knight 7-6 (4), 6-0 in the first round. Sophomore Alana McMahon, who had a bye in the first round, earned a win over Pacific’s Kateryna Nezhura in the second round, then also took a 6-0, 6-4 win over Santa Clara’s Kimmi Cox in the third.
