Dons To Face No. 6 Cal Sunday

Feb. 1, 2008

San Francisco (2-2) women's tennis heads to the east bay to face No. 6 Cal Sunday in Berkeley at 10 a.m. Updates on the competition can found at CalBears.com.

LAST TIME OUT FOR USF: Jenni Heinser remained perfect in the new year but San Francisco women's tennis finished it's spring season opening road trip with losses to Utah and Oregon Sunday and Monday.

USF lost the dual to the Utes by a score of 5-2 and then the Ducks nicked the Dons 4-3. In both instances, Heinser led off the contest with three set victories, topping Utah's Elizabeth Ferris, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3; and Oregon's Celine Rolly 1-6, 6-1, 7-6.

Jenny Sperry took a two set match-up versus Utah's Leigh Walsh to score the Dons' second point versus the Utes. Sperry defeated Walsh by a score of 7-5 (6-0), 7-6.

The final two points against the Ducks were scored in singles' wins by Mylene Martin and Mekpoh. Martin topped Oregon's Carmen Seremeta 6-4, 6-3; and Mekpoh edged Mimi Songsermsawas 6-4, 6-0.

SCOUTING CAL: Last week, the Golden Bears traveled to the Los Angeles area to take on No. 41 Long Beach State and No. 18 Pepperdine but returned home with a 1-0 record after the match against the Waves was cancelled due to heavy rains. After starting out 1-0 in its own season, Long Beach State suffered a 7-0 sweep at the hands of the Bears. The Bears took all seven points in the first dual match and won all three doubles matches for good measure. Senior Susie Babos, ranked No. 10, defeated the 49ers' top-court player Hannah Grady 6-4, 6-1 to pace the Bears while fellow senior Stephanie Kusano continued her dominance on the sixth court, extending her winning streak to a fifth match. No. 31 junior Bojana Bobusic won her 17th match of the season, defeating Jessica Weeks 6-3, 6-1 and freshman Marina Cossou won her ninth-consecutive match, taking a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Deborah Armstrong.

USF VERSUS CAL: The Bears have defeated the Dons in each of its 14 meetings but have not faced USF in a dual match since 1985, winning that match-up 9-0 (when each doubles match still counted as a point). USF has faced several Cal players in tournament play this year however. Meeting seniors Emma Taylor, Jessica Kapoor and sophomore Jennifer Heinser, the Bears took a 3-1 singles record against the trio during fall play.
