Lady Dons Travel to San Luis Obispo
It was a long drive to SLO to only get in one of three scheduled dual matches due to rain, rain,
and more rain. The Lady Dons played a tough match in between storms on Friday against UC
Riverside.
The other two matches against Cal Poly and conference rival, Loyola Marymount, were cancelled due to nasty weather. In the dual against UC Riverside, matches were played until a school clinched the victory with 4 wins. In singles action, #2 Aaryn Volkmann and #3 Carey Savage smelled victory, but couldnt close out their matches. They played very well, but didnt come up with the big points at the critical time. Somers quotes, "I was proud of them for not babying the ball at crunch time. They hit their shots and played their game, but their opponents just came up with some wicked shots." Doubles was not played due to darkness, as UC Riverside had already clinched the match. "We are definitely moving better as our season progresses and are running down more short balls than ever. Our sprints are paying off," states Coach Somers. Singles 1. Caitlin Blashaw (USR) def. Caroline Tweeton (USF) 6-1 6-3 2. Kristina Schuster (UCR) def. Aaryn Volkmann (USF) 7-5 7-5 3.
