Lady Dons Go 2-2 Over Spring Break
The USF Lady Dons had a productive Spring Break down in Glendale, Arizona,
achieving a 2-2 win loss record over the break. While down in Arizona, they played four dual
matches, two Division I schools and two Division II schools.
The first day saw the Lady Dons playing against St. Louis University (Div. I), where Caroline Tweeton was the sole point contributor for USF. She played a very tough match going down in the first set 6-4 before fighting back 6-4 in the second and winning the match in a close 10-8 super tie-breaker, played in lieu of a third set. The other Lady Dons also played very well, adjusting to the heat the first day, and put up a tough front against the strong St. Louis. The first win came the second day when the Lady Dons downed Montana State (Div II) 6-1. The first point came in the doubles when all three double pairs won their matches. In the singles, the top five of the ladder won all their matches in a very convincing manner. They didn't give their opponents a chance to break back. They played intelligently and waited for their opportunities. "Their confidence continues to grow throughout each match. They are playing their best tennis of the season so far," states Coach Somers. The third day was a very tough day for USF. They faced Northern Arizona University (Div I) and lost 7-0. Playing on home ground, Northern Arizona didn't give the Lady Dons a chance to clinch a match even when Aaryn Volkmann, playing #2 singles, was playing one of her best matches of the season. She fought like a cornered rat in trying to upset her opponent before falling 6-4, 6-4. Carey Savage (playing #3 singles) also had several break opportunities but couldn't come up with the crucial points to upset her opponent, falling 6-2, 6-1. The final day of match play was a triumphant one as the Dons ended their trip on a winning note. They beat Southwestern State University 6-1. Southwestern, coming from the snow in Minnesota not only had to battle the Lady Dons but they also had to battle the scorching heat of Arizona, something they were not used to. The Lady Dons won in every slot except at #6 singles. Jamie Johnson, playing at #6, tried to make a comeback in the second set, hoping to bring her match into the third set. She played with a lot of guts today even though she fell 6-2, 7-5 to her opponent. With more match play, she will gain more confidence on the tennis court and will be a point contributor for the team.
