The USF men's and women's tennis teams will begin play in the WCC Championships Friday. The women open play as the number four seed at Pepperdine and the men as the sixth seed at the University of San Diego.

The women (10-9) are scheduled to open play at 11:00 a.m. on Friday when they face fifth seed San Diego (5-15). The Dons have won eight of their last ten matches.

USF defeated San Diego 6-1 on March 11th, but the Toreros were nursing injuries at that time and USF coach Hillary Somers expects a very competitive match.

"We are excited and expecting a lot of great matches all weekend," said Somers. "This event is where you see a lot of players peak and play their best tennis of the season. First round against San Diego is going to be intense. They have a few players back that were injured earlier in the season. We just hope that the weather holds up and we play as well as we can."

The USF men (11-12) will face host San Diego (9-11) Friday at 1:30 p.m. The Dons enter the match on a two match winning streak, with wins over Saint Mary's and Pacific. USF and San Diego have not met this season.

USF has one of the hottest players in the league in number one singles player Matthew Berry. The senior from South Africa has won 14 of his last 16 matches.
