Dons Enjoy Strong Showing At San Francisco Open

(San Francisco) - The University of San Francisco tennis teams enjoyed a strong showing last weekend at the San Francisco Open in Golden Gate Park. Highlighting the event for USF was the men's first doubles title at the event. Both former Dons, new members of the program and the coaching staff participated in the tournament. Thai Tu and Asaf Cohen teamed in doubles action to earn the historic title for San Francisco. The win marked the first doubles title at the event in program history. Tu and Cohen defeated USF head coach Peter Barlett and Pable Pires de Almeida in the championship match. The contest lasted over three and half hours, with Tu and Cohen earning a thrilling 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 victory. In singles action, former Don Tommy Tu earned the singles title, defeating Greg Lee in straight sets 7-5, 6-2. Also making notable efforts, freshmen William Schumacher and Mark De Castro each reached the quarterfinals in both the singles and doubles bracket. On the women's side, Jennifer-Lee Heinser nabbed the women's singles title. Last year, Heinser earned her second consecutive WCC Player of the Year honor and was the lone WCC representative to earn a singles bid to the NCAA Tournament last season.
