USF Women's Tennis Kicked Off Fall Season Play at the Nike Cal Invitational
Oct. 5, 2007
It was an intense weekend of competition to kick off the 2007-2008 season. Who would think I would be wearing my down jacket and we would have rain delays the first day of competition this year???? Luckily, the rain held off pretty well. The competition was stiff this past weekend with Cal, Arizona State, Univ of Arizona, Northwestern, Fresno State, Long Beach State, UOP, and good old WCC rivals Santa Clara and Saint Mary's (we scoped them out for the season :-))One major thing I learned this weekend is the girls on all the teams are getting bigger and stronger each year. You look at them and wonder is it basketball??? volleyball???... no, it's tennis!!!!! They must be eating their Wheaties!!!! We will work on that as well. :-)
We had a solid performance for our first outing of the year. Gosh, we might as well have played a dual match against Arizona State. We played quite a few members of their team all weekend throughout the individual tournament. Specifically, the duo of Jenny Sperry and Mylene Martin had a big win over an ASU team first round to then get ousted by a strong Cal team in the next round with a respectable 8-4 score. Jenny Sperry also held strong in her first round with another victory over an ASU player winning in straight sets. Mylene Martin had a strong weekend after losing her first round singles match in three sets to a Wildcat from the Univ of Arizona who was twice her size. Mylene bounced back for a solid straight set win against a top player from Sacramento State and then went on to beat an ASU Sundevil in straight sets to make it to the finals of the backdraw where she lost on Sunday to another ASU player. Yes, they were all over the draw. :-)
