Women's Tennis Earns Five Wins at Saint Mary's Invitational

USF women's tennis traveled to Moraga, California on October 23, 2001 to participate in the St. Mary's College ITA Invitational. Schools that participated in the tournament included Pacific, UC-Davis, Fresno State, Santa Clara, Gonzaga, Sacramento State, San Jose State, St. Mary's and California.

In the first round of competition, USF's Carey Savage defeated Christy Battig of UC-Davis 6-3, 6-4. Savage advanced to the second round of 32 players and was defeated by #14 seeded Ana Lukner of San Jose State 6-4, 6-2. Gabriela Ruiz defeated Catalina Fillol of Saint Mary's College 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of play. Ruiz then defeated Ana Nordell of San Jose State 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the third round. Ruiz was finally defeated by Lucia Tallo of Fresno State 6-4, 6-2.

Caysea Dawson also saw action in the second round of the tournament after advancing due to injury from Amanda Wise of University of San Diego. Dawson was defeatec by Christina Rivieccio of Sacramento State 6-4, 6-0 in the second round. Two Lady Dons were forced to withdraw from the tournament due to injury as well. Anna Skogerboe and Alyssa Samuel did not compete in the singles division of the tournament due to injury.

On the doubles side of the tournament, one team of Lady Dons made it past the first round of play. Gabriela Ruiz and Caroline Tweeton defeated Christina Rivieccio and Amanda Sanchez of Sacramento State 9-7 in the first round. Ruiz and Tweeton were then defeated by Janelle Kaloi and Christine Limbers of Saint Mary's College 8-6 in the second round.

The Lady Dons return to action this weekend at the Omni Hotels Western Regional Championships taking place at Stanford. Schools included in the tournament include Fresno State, Gonzaga, Idaho, Nevada, Pacific, Portland, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's College, Santa Clara, California, Oregon, Washington, and Washington State. The four-day tournament will be held at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

Singles- 1. Anna Skogerboe was defeated by Ashley Lehman (UCD) due to injury, first round 2. Alyssa Samuel was defeated by Leigh Orme (GON) due to injury, first round 3. Carey Savage defeated Christy Battig (UCD) in first round 6-3, 6-4. 4. Caret Savage was defeated by #14 Ana Lukner (SJS) in second round 6-4, 6-2 5. Michelle Duncan was defeated by Roberta Fessenko (Sac State) 6-0, 6-0 in first round 6. Nikki Kobayashi was defeated by Jaime Buterbaugh (GON) 6-0, 6-2 in first round 7. Caroline Tweeton was defeated by Pati Ruiz (SCU) 6-2, 6-3 in first round 8. Gabriela Ruiz defeated Catalina Fillol (SMC) 7-6(5), 6-2 in first round 9. Gabriela Ruiz defeated Ana Nordell (SJS) 6-4, 6-4 in second round 10. Gabriela Ruiz was defeated by Lucia Tallo (FSU) 6-4, 6-2 in third round 11. Caysea Dawson was defeated Amanda Wise (USD) due to injury in first round 12. Caysea Dawson was defeated by Christina Rivieccio (Sac State) 6-4, 6-0 in second round

Doubles- 1. Michelle Duncan and Carey Savage were defeated by Mariko Kawakami and Nicole McCord (SCU) 8-0 in first round 2. Gabriela Ruiz and Caroline Tweeton defeated Christina Rivieccio and Amanda Sanchez (SAC) 9-7 in first round 3. Gabriela Ruiz and Caroline Tweeton were defeated by Janelle Kaloi and Christine Limbers (SMC) 8-6 in second round 4. Caysea Dawson and Alyssa Samuel were defeated by Nicole Hunstock and Valerie Verrier (SMC) 8-0 in first round 5. Nikki Kobayashi and Anna Skogerboe were defeated by Kristen Case and Rio Del Rosario (CAL) 8-5 in first round
