USF Drops Final Match of Fresno State Invitational to UNLV 3-0

(Fresno) - USF got off to a slow start and could not recover, dropping a 30-17, 30-28, 30-25 decision to UNLV in the final day of the 2004 Fresno State Invitational Saturday afternoon in the North Gym. The Dons (4-9) made some defensive mistakes and the Rebels (5-4) were able to take advantage of them.
Sophomore outside hitter Theresa Hart led the Dons offensive charge, posting a match-high 15 kills on .364 hitting and added 11 digs for the double-double. Senior outside hitter Stephanie Voelckers also turned in a double-dip with a 15 kill, 15 dig night and added five blocks. Junior middle blocker KeLicia Shorts had nine kills on .500 hitting and recorded five blocks.
Shorts was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 2.53 kills on a team-best .322 attack percentage to go along with 0.93 digs and 1.20 blocks per game. Shorts recorded 13 blocks (five solo) in tournament. It is the first career all-tournament selection for Shorts.
A pair of freshmen defensive specialists tallied double-digit digs as Erin Fujimoto shared the team lead with 15, while Ally Henthorn added 13 for the Dons. Sophomore setter Jamie Kartchner dished out 45 assists and USF hit at a .184 clip for the match. UNLV hit .258 in the contest.
San Francisco returns to action Friday when they travel to Fort Worth to compete in the 2004 Texas Christian Horned Frog Invitational. The Dons take on the host Horned Frogs in opening round action Friday, September 24 at 5:00 PM.
