Dons Volleyball Sweeps Texas Christian in TCU Molten Invitational Opener

(Fort Worth) - USF Volleyball opened play at the 2004 TCU Molten Invitational with a strong sweep against tournament host Texas Christian, winning 30-22, 30-23, 30-18 Friday night at the University Rec Center. The Dons (5-9) hit at a blistering .318 pace for the match and three players reached double-figure kill totals against the Horned Frogs (7-5).
Sophomore Theresa Hart led the way for the Dons with a match-high 17 kills and added 10 digs for the double-double. Freshman outside hitter Kristin Hasselberg added 13 kills on .524 hitting and committed just two errors on 21 swings. Junior middle blocker KeLicia Shorts added 13 kills on .500 hitting and added four blocks (one solo) for USF, while senior middle blocker Ashley Bello added seven kills on .462 hitting to go along with three blocks.
Sophomore setter Jamie Kartchner dished out 53 assists and added six digs. Freshman libero Brynn Maurer played well for USF in her first match after missing two weeks with an illness and chipped in with a team-high 15 digs. Senior outside hitter Stephanie Voelckers had eight kills on .412 hitting and added 12 digs for San Francisco.
San Francisco jumped out to a big lead in game one fueled by a .350 attack percentage and led by as many as 10 points. TCU stormed back in the second game, building a 14-11 lead, but the Dons fought back and tied the score at 20-20. From there USF ran off a 10-3 run to take a two games to none lead heading into the intermission.
USF simply overwhelmed the Horned Frogs to start the third set, building a 16-8 lead and improved it to 19-9 to complete the three game sweep. San Francisco hit at a remarkable .417 pace in the final game with just three attack errors and four players hit .400 or better for the match.
San Francisco returns to action in the TCU Molten Invitational Saturday with a pair of matches. The Dons open with an 11:00 AM (PT) contest against Grambling State, before taking on Prairie View A & M in the tournament finale at 5:00 PM (PT).
