USF Volleyball Falls 3-1 against #16 Saint Mary's in 2004 Home Finale

(San Francisco) - USF played well in stretches, but could not pull off the upset falling in four games, 30-28, 24-30, 30-17, 30-23 to #16 Saint Mary's in West Coast Conference volleyball action Saturday night at War Memorial Gym. The Dons (11-19, 4-10 WCC) could not overcome a big block thrown up by the Gaels (23-3, 12-2 WCC), who complete the season sweep against San Francisco in the league finale for both teams.
Senior outside hitter Stephanie Voelckers led four USF players with double-digit kill tallies, finishing with 15 kills and 22 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Theresa Hart added 13 kills and 20 digs, while junior middle blocker KeLicia Shorts and freshman outside hitter Kristin Hasselberg each added 11 kills.
Freshman libero Brynn Maurer tied her career-high with 32 digs, the fifth-highest single-match tally in program history for a four-game match. Sophomore setter Jamie Kartchner dished out 51 assists and added 13 digs for the Dons, who hit at a .151 clip for the match.
Saint Mary's recorded 22 team blocks on the night, while San Francisco managed six, led by three each from senior middle blocker Ashley Bello, Hasselberg and Shorts.
Freshman outside hitter Melissa Stidman recorded a match-high 16 kills to go along with 14 digs, while junior outside hitter Kaui Salzman added 13 kills and 11 digs. The night belonged to the SMC block as four players tallied seven or more blocks, led by nine from sophomore middle Mariko Coverdale. Sophomore setter Mandy Bible also added nine blocks to go along with 53 assists.
USF closes out their season when they compete in the 2004 Banker's Classic, hosted by Pacific. The Dons square off against Nevada Friday, November 26 in a 5:00 PM match at the Spanos Center.
