USF Volleyball's Haley Carroll Named West Coast Conference co-Player of the Week

Oct. 23, 2006

(San Francisco) - Freshman libero Haley Carroll enjoyed an outstanding week helping the Dons to back-to-back West Coast Conference sweeps and for her efforts earned WCC Player of the Week honors for the first time in her young career. Although rarely recognized with weekly honors, few liberos enjoyed the kind of week Carroll did in helping the Dons to the only 2-0 record in week four of the league schedule. The Gilroy native averaged a mind-boggling 8.33 digs (50 total) in back-to-back sweeps of the Bulldogs and Portland, including a new USF three-game single-match record of 29 against the Pilots, shattering the previous best of 27 set by Kelly Harris (1994-95) against Idaho State (9/16/94). Carroll excelled in serve receive with 40 total receptions with just two errors, helping the Dons hit at an impressive .313 clip for the weekend.

Just 24 matches into her collegiate career, freshman libero Haley Carroll has already cracked the USF single-season digs record chart with 449, good for fifth place on the list. With her 12th dig against Gonzaga (10/19) Carroll passed USF Legend of the Hilltop Brittanie Budinger (2000-03), who recorded 411 in 2003. Caroll leads the Dons and the WCC with 5.35 digs per game and is chasing current teammate junior outside hitter Brynn Maurer, who recorded 457 digs as a freshman in 2004 and set the single-season standard with 544 last year.

Carroll is the second player to earn WCC Player of the Week honors this season, joining Alix Gombos (9/24). In addition, Carroll is the first libero in school history to capture weekly league accolades.

San Francisco travels south for a crucial WCC match at ancient Bay Area rival No. 22 Santa Clara Thursday, October 26. Match time against the Broncos is set for 7:00 PM at the Leavey Center.
