USF Volleyball Falls 3-1 at Ancient Bay Area Rival Santa Clara in WCC Action

(Santa Clara, CA) - USF volleyball played well in stretches, but could not overcome ancient Bay Area and West Coast Conference rival Santa Clara, dropping a 3-1 decision (30-16, 17-30, 30-21, 30-26) Thursday night at the Leavey Event Center. The Dons (15-10, 4-5 WCC) could not complete the series sweep after snapping a 34-match losing streak to their archrivals with an October 6 sweep against the Broncos (17-9, 9-1 WCC), who avenged their only conference loss this season.
Junior outside hitter Addie Webster tallied a team-high 15 kills on .343 hitting with seven digs. Freshman opposite hitter Sarah Mandala, the reigning WCC Player of the Week added 11 kills on .400 hitting despite receiving just 20 sets for the match. Junior setter Darcy Carroll dished out 27 assists, while sophomore libero Haley Carroll tallied a team-high 17 digs with a pair of aces.
USF hit .215 for the match, including a remarkable .467 rate in its game two win with 16 kills, two errors in 30 swings. The Dons managed just nine kills on .167 attacking in game four. Santa Clara countered with .260 hitting with 68 kills and 28 errors. The Broncos hit .410 in game one and .429 in game three.
Krista Kelley led three Broncos in double-digit kills with 20, while senior All-American setter Crystal Matich dished out 52 assists with 11 digs and five kills. Junior outside hitter Brittany Lowe added 17 kills and 11 digs.
San Francisco returns to action when it travels across the Bay Bridge to take on another long-time WCC foe in Saint Mary's Saturday, November 3. First serve against the Gaels is set for 7:00 PM at McKeon Pavilion.
