Scott Wong Named Volleyball Associate Head Coach
June 25, 2009
(San Francisco) - Scott Wong will join the USF volleyball coaching staff as the associate head coach as announced by the Dons' head coach Gilad Doron, Thursday. A current USA men's volleyball assistant coach and former National Team member, Wong has spent the past two seasons with the third-ranked Pepperdine men's volleyball team as an assistant coach.
Wong joins the Dons as a replacement for former associate head coach Dan Fisher, who has left the Hilltop for the associate head coach position with the University of Hawai'i men's volleyball program.
"I am extremely excited to add Scott to the USF volleyball family. He brings a wealth of volleyball knowledge and great technical skills to the Hilltop. His playing experience at the collegiate level, the international level and as a top professional beach player will be beneficial to our program. His experience, work ethic and commitment to building a successful program will be a welcome addition to our team. I am confident that Scott will have a key role in helping to lead the Dons into the new era."
"I am excited about the opportunity to join the USF family," said Wong. "Gilad and his staff have done a wonderful job in creating an atmosphere of athletic and academic success and I hope to add to this culture."
Wong served two stints as an assistant coach at Pepperdine under head coach Marv Dunphy, who has won four NCAA National Championships and coached the US National Team to a gold medal at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea. Wong first aided in coaching the Waves during the 2005 and 2006 seasons, before returning for the 2008 and 2009 campaigns.
During his four seasons in Malibu, Wong helped lead Pepperdine to an 82-26 record (.759), two Mountain Sports Pacific Federation titles, an NCAA Championship title and a runner-up finish at the 2008 National Championships. His duties with the Waves included overseeing the development of the setters, outside hitters and middle blockers, while also coordinating the team's defense.
During the 2006-07 school year, Wong returned to his native Hawai'i to serve as an assistant coach for the Hawai'i women's program. That season, the Warriors captured the Western Athletic Conference Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight.
More recently, Wong served as an assistant coach for United States Men's Volleyball A2 team during the summer of 2009 and the team competed at the Pan American Cup in Mexico.
His previous coaching experience also includes guiding the Santa Monica Beach Club 16s and 18s, and leading the Oaks Christian High School girl's team to a conference championship in 2004.
Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Wong was a member of the US National Team in the World League. As part of the team, he helped lead the team to a gold medal at the 2001 World University Games in Beijing, China.
Wong also enjoyed an illustrious beach volleyball career. In 2002, he posted a second place finish in the 2007 New York AVP Tour event and earned rankings as high as No. 16 individually and No. 6 as a team.
A four-year letter winner for Pepperdine, Wong was a four-time all-conference selection and a three-time AVCA All-America, earning first team accolades in 1999 and 2000. In 1998, he was named Freshman of the Year by both the AVCA and the MPSF.
A native of Pearl City, Hawai'i, Wong earned a degree in business administration from Pepperdine in 2001. He also earned a master's degree in education from Loyola Marymount in 2005.
