USF Volleyball Sweeps UT Arlington in Asics/Powerade Challenge

(San Francisco) - USF Volleyball swept UT Arlington 25-16, 25-16, 25-13 in game three of the 2008 Asics/Powerade Challenge Saturday at War Memorial Gym. In the second match of the day, UCSB swept Utah State 25-19, 25-18, 25-21 in career victory No. 800 for volleyball hall-of-famer Kathy Gregory. In her 34th season - al at UC Santa Barbara, Gregory becomes the sixth head coach to reach the milestone.

USF def. UT Arlington 3-0: San Francisco hit a crisp .400 and cruised to its second straight victory. Sarah Mandala had a team-high 13 kills on .458 hitting, while senior middle blocker Alix Gombos had a monster match with 10 on .643 hitting to go along with a pair of blocks. Senior middle blocker Carly Babin added seven kills on .700 hitting and did not record an attack error in 10 swings.

USF (3-2) recorded eight service aces and held the Mavericks to a .167 attack percentage for the match, including a -.069 rate in game three. Senior setter Darcy Carroll dished out a team-high 20 assists, while sophomore Alaina Sully added 16. Junior libero Haley Carroll tallied a match-high 13 digs in the contest for the Dons.

UTA (3-3) got eight kills and seven digs from Bianca Sauls and Amanda Aguilera also added eight kills to go along with seven digs. The Mavericks take on UCSB in the final match for both teams set for a 5:00 PM first serve.

UCSB def. Utah State 3-0: UC Santa Barbara hit .348 for the match and helped head coach Kathy Gregory to her 800th career victory in the process. Charlene DeHoog led the way for the Gauchos (2-2) with 10 kills and a pair of blocks.

Melissa Osterloh recorded a match-high 12 kills for Utah State (0-6), while Kris Hymas added 10 for the Aggies. USU takes on tournament host USF tonight at 7:00 PM in the tournament finale.
