(Sacramento) - USF volleyball traveled to the state capital Tuesday night for their first road match of the season against Sacramento State where they dropped a 30-28, 31-29, 30-20 non-conference decision in the Hornet's Nest. The Dons (3-3) played well at times, but could not sustain it against a talented Hornet (4-1) team playing on their home court.
After trailing 17-11 early in game one, San Francisco recovered, closing to 22-21. The Hornets made a push and a USF service error at game point ensured the Sacramento State victory in the opening frame.
San Francisco led by as many as five points late in the match at 21-16, but the Hornets rallied for the win in game two for a 2-0 advantage heading into the intermission. Senior outside hitter Stephanie Voelckers led the way for the Dons and had a double-double outing with 12 kills and 11 digs after just two games.
It was all Sacramento State in game three as they sprinted out to a 12-4 lead and never looked back.
Voelckers led the way for the Dons offensively with a match-high 16 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Theresa Hart added eight kills and 10 digs, while freshman libero Brynn Maurer added 10 digs for USF.
Senior outside hitter Sandra Bandimere tallied 15 kills for the Hornets, who hit .246 for the match. USF hit at a .122 clip. Sacramento State won the war at the net, owning a 11-6 block advantage.
USF returns to action Thursday afternoon when they open play in the 2004 Stanford Invitational. The Dons square off against #7 Penn State in a 5:00 PM match at Burnham Pavilion.
