(San Francisco) - USF remained unbeaten at home dispatching Villanova 25-20, 22-25, 25-21, 25-14 in day two of the 2008 Asics/Coca-Cola Invitational Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Gym. The Dons (6-2) won their fifth straight match and improved to 3-0 lifetime against the Wildcats (4-5). Senior middle blocker Carly Babin unloaded for a match-high 17 kills on .607 attacking, while sophomore opposite hitter Sarah Mandala added 15 kills on .357 hitting with a pair of blocks. Senior middle blocker Alix Gombos registered nine kills on .438 hitting with four blocks (one solo) and senior outside hitter Addie Webster added seven kills and nine digs for the Dons. Sophomore setter Alaina Sully dished out a team-high 25 assists, while senior setter Darcy Carroll added 23. Junior libero Haley Carroll recorded a match-high 15 digs to go along with a pair of aces. San Francisco hit .339 for the match including a remarkable .654 in the clinching game four. The Dons had 18 kills and just one error in 26 attempts in the final set. USF recorded eight aces and capitalized on 11 service errors by Villanova. San Francisco takes on Miami (9-0) in the championship match set for 7:00 PM. Miami 3, Sacramento State 0 - Match Four, 2008 USF Asics/Coca-Cola Invitational: Miami hit .323 for the match and rolled to a 25-11, 25-23, 25-15 sweep of Sacramento State in Saturday action in the Asics/Coca-Cola Invitational. The Hurricanes (9-0) defeated the Hornets (2-7) for the second time this season. Genny Mayhew led a balanced attack for Miami with nine kills, while Ashley Woods and Lici McGee each added seven. The Hurricanes used a huge block to hold the Hornets to a .094 attack percentage and tallied nine team blocks compared to one for Sacramento State.
Brittany Ferguson recorded nine kills for the Hornets, while Kelsey Elston added eight. Sacramento State closes out tournament play at 5:00 PM against Villanova (4-5). |
