USF Volleyball Improves to 11-2 With Dominating Sweep of Cal Poly

Sept. 13, 2005

Final Stats

(San Francisco) - USF Volleyball opened its three-game homestand with a satisfying sweep of Cal Poly 30-12, 30-23, 30-27 in non-conference action Tuesday night at War Memorial Gym. The Dons (11-2) hit .270 for the match and used a huge block to dispatch the Mustangs (7-2).

Sophomore outside hitter Kristin Hasselberg led the way for USF offensively with a match-high 17 kills to go along with a pair of aces, while senior opposite hitter Jencie Lejeune tied a career-high with 12 kills on .688 hitting and a career-best seven blocks. Sophomore middle hitter Linzy Kearney also set a career-high with 11 blocks (two solo), good for a share of third place on the Dons single-match block charts.

Senior middle blocker KeLicia Shorts added 11 kills on .348 hitting. Junior setter Jamie Kartchner dished out 35 assists to go along with three aces, six digs and a pair of blocks. Sophomore libero Brynn Maurer recorded a match-high 14 digs and surpassed 700 in her career with her second of the night.

"I'm proud of the way the team bounced back after a rough weekend," USF head coach Jeff Nelson said. "We did a good job of staying with the game plan. I was really pleased with the play of Jencie attacking and of Linzy blocking. I thought the passing was great all night. This was a good win for us against a quality opponent. We did some nice things out there. Now we must work on some things and prepare for Pacific this weekend."

San Francisco led wire-to-wire in games one and two and opened up big leads and never let up on the throttle. Game three was a different story as Cal Poly broke through for its first leads of the match. The Mustangs held a 13-9 advantage. It would not last long as the Dons reeled off a 7-1 run to take a 16-14 lead they would not surrender, although Cal Poly tied the contest at 25-25 before USF closed out the match on a 5-2 run.

Senior outside hitter Vanessa Gilliam paced the Mustangs with 11 kills, while senior outside hitter Kayla Mulder added eight.

San Francisco returns to action Saturday, September 17 when it hosts Pacific. First serve against the Tigers is slated for 7:00 PM at War Memorial Gym.
