(Fullerton, CA) - USF volleyball tackled tournament host Cal State Fullerton Friday night in the opening round of the 2008 Titan Classic and seized a 20-25, 28-26, 25-16, 25-15 victory at Titan Gym. The Dons (7-3) won the Titan Classic in 2000 and have now won four straight matches on the Titans' (5-7) home floor. Sophomore opposite hitter Sarah Mandala once again enjoyed an outstanding night, matching her career-high with a match-high 22 kills on .317 hitting and completed the double-double with a career-high 14 digs. Senior outside hitter Addie Webster also collected a double-double with 16 kills on .317 attacking to go along with 16 digs. With her 10th kill on the night, Webster surpassed 1,000 career kills, finishing with 1,007. Webster notched 669 kills in two seasons at Eastern Washington before transferring to USF for the 2007 season. Senior middle blocker Carly Babin added 11 kills on .349 hitting, while senior middle Alix Gombos added 10 on .444 to go along with two blocks (one solo). Senior setter Darcy Carroll did a nice job running the Dons offense, which hit at an impressive .302 clip for the match. Five players recorded at least eight kills in the contest, eight coming from senior outside hitter Zuzana Bednarova, playing in her first match of the season. Junior libero Haley Carroll recorded a match-high 23 digs for San Francisco. USF held a dominating 75-54 digs advantage and a commanding 72-40 kills lead.
San Francisco returns to tournament action Saturday morning when it takes on No. 9 California at 10:00 AM. The Dons close out their trip to the O.C. against Central Connecticut State at 4:30 PM at Titan Gym. |
