USF Volleyball Battles, but Falls to No. 9 Cal

(Fullerton, CA) - USF volleyball took on its second ranked opponent of the season, dropping a hard fought match to rising national power No. 9 Cal 25-23, 26-24, 26-24 in the morning match of the 2008 Titan Classic, hosted by Cal State Fullerton. The Dons (7-4) just could not slow down the Golden Bears (9-1) enough to claim a set in the match featuring 29 tie scores and 13 lead changes.

Sophomore opposite hitter Sarah Mandala paced San Francisco with 11 kills, four digs, three blocks and an ace, while senior outside hitter Zuzana Bednarova tallied 10 kills. Senior middle blockers Carly Babin and Alix Gombos and senior outside hitter Addie Webster added six kills apiece for the Dons.

Junior libero Haley Carroll recorded 10 digs for USF with three aces. Senior setter Darcy Carroll dished out 30 assists with six digs.

USF hit at a .217 clip, including .333 in the third set, but Cal hit a remarkable .361, committing just 13 attack errors in 108 attempts. The Golden Bears hit a sizzling .444 in game one and held a 10.0-5.0 blocks advantage. Hana Cutura led Cal with a match-high 18 kills, hitting a whopping. 533 with six digs and a pair of blocks.

San Francisco closes out tournament play against Central Connecticut State at 4:30 PM at Titan Gym.
