USF Volleyball Wins 2004 TCU Molten Invitational

(Fort Worth) - USF volleyball dominated once again in the second day of action of the 2004 TCU Molten Invitational, sweeping Grambling State (30-16, 30-14, 30-22) and Prairie View (30-18, 30-17, 30-18) to win the tournament title Saturday night at the University Rec. Center. The Dons (7-9) did not drop a game in the tournament and did not allow an opponent to reach 24 points in the three matches. For USF it is their fifth tournament victory in two seasons.

San Francisco hit at an outstanding .315 clip as a team for the tournament, averaging 16.67 kills per game. The Dons also shone defensively, averaging 15.00 digs and 2.17 blocks per game.

Junior middle blocker KeLicia Shorts earned tournament MVP honors for the first time in her career and was nearly unstoppable during the weekend, averaging 3.86 kills per game on .535 hitting and added 1.29 blocks to go along with eight service aces. Sophomore outside hitter Theresa Hart joined Shorts on the all-tournament squad and also enjoyed a big tournament, averaging a tournament-high 4.44 kills and 3.00 digs to go along with 10 aces. Sophomore setter Jamie Kartchner earned her second all-tournament nod of the season, averaging 14.00 assists, 1.89 digs and 1.11 blocks over the weekend.

Freshman outside hitter Kristin Hasselberg put together the best three consecutive matches of her young career, averaging 3.86 kills on .439 hitting.

USF opens the 2004 West Coast Conference schedule Friday October 1 when they host defending league champion Pepperdine. First serve against the Waves is slated for 7:00 PM at War Memorial Gym.

USF def. Prairie View A&M 3-0 - San Francisco dominated Prairie View A & M winning 30-18, 30-17, 30-18 to secure the 2004 TCU Molten Invitational Championship. The Dons hit .319 as six players recorded at least five kills. The Panthers hit at a .025 pace in the contest.

 

 

Sophomore outside hitter Theresa Hart had a match-high nine kills and 11 digs for the Dons who completed their third straight sweep. The Dons tallied 13 service aces. USF also held a 43-24 kill advantage.

Grambling State 3-0 - Sophomore outside hitter Theresa Hart slammed a match-high 14 kills to lead USF past Grambling State 30-16, 30-14, 30-22 in the third match of the 2004 TCU Molten Invitational. Freshman outside hitter Kristin Hasselberg added 10 kills for the Dons who hit .307 in the contest and held the Tigers to just a .067 percentage for the match.

Sophomore setter Jamie Kartchner dished out 40 assists and added 10 digs for San Francisco. Freshman libero Brynn Maurer recorded a match-high 11 digs in the contest. The Dons tallied 10 service aces and Hart established a career-high with six.
