USF Volleyball Swept by Pepperdine in West Coast Conference Opener

(San Francisco) - USF hosted Pepperdine to open the 2004 West Coast Conference season and dropped a 30-26, 30-20, 30-23 decision Friday night at War Memorial Gym. The Dons (7-10, 0-1 WCC) simply could not slow down the Waves (3-7, 1-0 WCC), who hit at a .381 clip for the match and recorded just eight attack errors on the night.

Freshman outside hitter Kristin Hasselberg and junior middle blocker KeLicia Shorts each recorded 10 kills apiece to lead the way offensively for San Francisco. Shorts hit .304 in the contest while senior middle blocker Ashley Bello added six kills on .500 hitting for USF who hit at a .163 pace for the match.

Sophomore outside hitter Theresa Hart recorded seven kills to go along with a match-high 14 digs, while freshman libero Brynn Maurer added 13 for the Dons. Senior outside hitter Stephanie Voelckers had seven kills and sophomore setter Jamie Kartchner dished out 30 assists.

Junior outside hitter Katy Daly pounded a match-high 18 kills on .432 hitting to go along with 11 digs, leading three Waves with double-digit kill tallies. Senior outside hitter Christina Hinds added 11 kills on .385 hitting, while Kristen Schultz added 10 kills on .421 hitting. Junior setter Melissa Melhorn had an outstanding match, dishing out 45 assists to go along with 10 digs and four blocks.

Sophomore middle blocker Kristin McClune led the way for the Waves defensively recording six blocks (one solo). Sophomore middle blocker Sophia Milo added six kills and four blocks for Pepperdine, who held a 10-3 block advantage in the contest.

USF returns to action when they host Loyola Marymount Saturday night at War Memorial Gym. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
