Dons Sweep Pilots In WCC Opener

(San Francisco) - Senior setter Darcy Carroll recorded her first double-double of the season Friday night as the USF volleyball team opened West Coast Conference play with a 25-21, 25-21, 25-22 win over Portland at War Memorial Gym. The win marked the Dons' (11-4, 1-0) 12th straight victory over the Pilots (5-11, 0-1). The last time San Francisco dropped a decision to Portland on the Hilltop was in 2000. Portland threatened to spoil the USF sweep in the second set, jumping out to an 18-8 advantage. After chipping away the lead to 21-14, the Dons, senior outside hitter Addie Webster serving, rallied to score 11 unanswered points to claim victory in the set . Carroll enjoyed a big evening recording a team-high 24 assists and 11 digs, recording four kills on five attempts with one service ace. Senior middle blockers Carly Babin and Alix Gombos led the USF offense, recording a team-high nine kills apiece to hit .429 and .471, respectively. Sophomore opposite Sarah Mandala recorded a career high seven blocks in addition to six kills and six digs. Junior libero Haley Carroll dished out a match-high 14 digs, while also recording three assists. Ashley Grayson paced the Pilots, recording a match-high 12 kills, while Jessica Clemens added 10. The Dons will resume WCC action Saturday, October 4 when they host Gonzaga at War Memorial Gym. First serve against the Bulldogs is slated for 1 p.m.
