(San Francisco, CA) - USF came out tough and defeated No. 21 Santa Clara 3-0 in West Coast Conference volleyball action at War Memorial Gym on Thursday. The Dons improve to 19-6, 9-2 WCC and the win puts them in a tie for first with San Diego. SCU falls to 17-7, 8-4 WCC. Santa Clara put up a good fight in set one, tying the Dons at 24-24 before USF took a quick two points to earn the 26-24 win. USF didn't have as much trouble in the second and third sets, taking 25-19 and 25-17 wins respectively. San Francisco consistently out-hit the Broncos, earning a final hitting percentage of just under three hundred at .291. Santa Clara hit just .195 for the match. The Dons played the toughest defense in set three, holding SCU to just .034 hitting. Senior Alix Gombos led the Dons attack with 12 kills on .579 hitting. Sarah Mandala, Anna Berger, and Addie Webster each added eight kills in the match. Senior Darcy Carroll led with 24 assists, and junior Haley Carroll racked up 17 digs. SCU's Anna Cmaylo paced the Broncos with 12 kills at .429 hitting. Brittany Lowe was also in double figure kills with 10. Lindsy Davigeadono had 28 assists and Taylor O'Brien earned 13 digs. USF continues action this Saturday against WCC and Bay Area foe Saint Mary's at War Memorial Gym. Prior to the 1:00 PM start, USF will honor the five seniors on the roster. Saturday will also be Alumni day, and numerous Dons volleyball Alums will be honored at the break.
