USF Places Fifth in Women, Seventh in Men at Santa Clara Invitational
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Oct. 16) - The Santa Clara women's cross country team,
behind the strong running of Jenny Smokey, finished second in its own
Bronco Invitational with 43 team points, trailing only CS Sacramento (29)
in the team standings. The USF Lady Dons placed fifth behind Roxanna
Jahani's 19:19.8 run.
Smokey covered the 2.93 mile Crystal Springs course in a time of 18:54.1, just off the winning pace set by Loyola Marymount's Malinlli Martinez (18:13.6). Junior Ellie Guy was the only other Santa Clara runner to finish in the Top 10, placing fifth with a time of 19:07.1 Broncos Allison Schaub (19:50.9), Erin Skourtes (19:52.1) and Christine Silva (20:01.1) finished 14th, 15th and 16th, respectively. (Oct. 16) - The Santa Clara men's cross country team captured its own Bronco Invitational Saturday morning at the Crystal Springs Course in Belmont, finishing with 32 team points to outdistance second place Saint Mary's, which finished with 53. Santa Clara senior Charlie Brenneman finished second in the individual standings with a time of 26:13.6 while teammate Mike Helms finished third with a time of 26:26.3 Nick Piziali (7th; 27:21.3) and Stephon Moore (10th; 27:55.8) also secured Top 10 finishes. Erik Mencarini of CS Sacramento took home top individual honors, covering the 8,000 meter course in a time of 25:57.7.
