USF Falls to Hot-Shooting BYU, 99-68

SAN FRANCISCO -- BYU made 15 of its 28 three-point attempts and coasted to a 99-68 victory over USF Saturday night in Memorial Gymnasium.
The Cougars nailed 11 of their 15 treys in the first half and shot 74.1 percent from the field to open a 57-29 lead at intermission and led by as many as 35 points at 68-33 less than five minutes into the second half. BYU ended the game shooting 60 percent from the floor and overpowered the Dons on the boards, 40-28.
Four Dons scored in double-figures, led by Kruize Pinkins' 15 points. Devin Watson, making his second consecutive start, finished with 13 while Mark Tollefsen and Tim Derksen added 12 and 11 points, respectively. USF managed to shoot 41.4 percent from the floor on the evening.
Tyler Haws, the country's sixth-leading scorer, finished with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor. Chase Fischer made 6-of-9 three-point attempts and finished with 20 points. Anson Winder (17), Kyle Collinsworth (12) and Jake Toolson (11) were also in double figures for the Cougars, who improved to 13-4 overall and 3-1 in the WCC.
In addition to Fischer's six treys, Haws, Toolson and Winder made three apiece to account for BYU's total of 15.
Ironcially, it was a three-pointer by Kruize Pinkins on the Dons' first possession that gave USF its only lead of the night at 3-0. BYU's first double-digit lead came at the 12:56 mark of the first half at 20-10. BYU's largest first half lead was 30 points at 57-27.
USF will take a 7-9 overall record and a 1-3 WCC ledger into Thursday night's game at Gonzaga. The Pacific Northwest roadtrip will conclude at Portland on Saturday afternoon.
Rex Walters' Post-Game Comments
"We didn't do a very good job especially in the first half of making their shooters bounce it. They had a lot of catch and shoots. I needed to do a better job in making our guys aware of how well they shoot it and how fast they play, even in the half court. They had us chasing and our commitments to the close outs wasn't nearly good enough."
"I thought their shot quality was very high. If they make contested shots and shots off the bounce, then I'd say OK. It was a snowball effect. Once you get some easy ones, the harder ones become that much easier, too. Tyler Haws and Chase Fischer shoot it like pros. You have to make guys like that bounce it."
"When a team shoots 60 percent on 55 shots and gets 10 offensive rebounds, I have to question how tough we are."
