Dons Third at St. Mary's Invite

POPPY HILLS, Calif. – USF's men's golf team lowered its score each day of the Saint Mary's Invitational to secure a third place finish at the 14 team event held at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.

The Dons closed the tournament on Wednesday with a 7-over 291 which was the team's lowest score of the three-day event. With a 54-hole score of 881 (+29), USF finished third, 28 strokes behind first place San Diego State (853) and 16 strokes back of second place Saint Mary's (865).

Three USF players – Tim Widing, Henry Chung and Max Alcorn – finished in the top-10 in the individual competition won by Eduardo Carrete of Saint Mary's, who claimed medalist honors with a 3-under score of 210, good for a one-stroke victory over San Diego State's PJ Samiere.

Widing closed with a 73 on Wednesday to secure a fifth place finish with a 54-hole score of 214 (+1). The freshman made the turn at 2-over but picked up four birdies on the backside, including one on 18, to finish with a 73.

Chung tied for sixth at 3-over 216 following a final round 72 which consisted of 15 pars, one birdie and two bogeys. It was the sophomore's fifth career top-10 in 12 events dating back to last season.

Alcorn, playing as an individual, shot a final round 73 to finish tied for ninth at 218 (+5). The senior made just one birdie on the day to go along with 14 pars and three bogeys. It was his second career top-10 following his sixth place finish at The Farms Invitational last season.

Junior Jalen Griffin shot 13 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 43rd place following a final round 72, which was his lowest score of the tournament after carding rounds of 81 and 73 the previous two days. Griffin's round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 10th hole.

Raymart Tolentino finished 59th at 231 after shooting a 77 on Wednesday, while Michael DeAngelo turned in his best round of the tournament with a 74 to finish tied for 68th at 236 (+23).
