Let's Play Two
Both USF squads tip-off its seasons tonight with a doubleheader on the Hilltop. The women's game against Sacramento State gets underway at 6:00 p.m. followed by the men's contest against Illinois-Chicago 30 minutes following the conclusion of the women's game. As part of the evening's festivities, USF's women's team will be presented with their WCC Championship trophy in between games. This is the first of two doubleheaders on the year for the men's and women's team. The two teams will be in action on Dec. 6 at Kezar Pavilion, when the women take on San Jose State followed by the men's contest against San Francisco State.
Â
Home Coaching Debuts
Both contests mark the USF coaching debuts of Kyle Smith and Molly Goodenbour. Smith, who was named Dons' head coach on March 30th after a six-year run at Columbia. Smith is just the sixth USF head coach since 1946 to make his debut at home, following Phil Woolpert in 1950, Pete Peletta in 1960, Pete Barry (1980), Jim Brovelli (1985) and Mathews. This is Goodenbour's third coaching stint at the Hilltop following one-year stays as an assistant coach in 1994-95 and 2005-06.
Â
Oh Very Young
Cat Stevens would love this year's USF men's team. Of the Dons 15 roster spots, 13 are occupied by underclassmen, including seven freshmen and six sophomores. Two of the newcomers - Frankie Ferrari and Nick Loew - return to the program after sitting out last season.
Â
What We're In For
No doubt, Illinois-Chicago endured a tough season last year, finishing 5-25 overall and 3-15 (10th) in the Horizon League. However, second-year head coach Steve McClain returns six letterwinners including four starters off of last year's squad including big time talents Dikembe Dixon, who averaged 19.8 points and 7.3 rebounds en route to earning Horizon League Freshman of the Year honors; and shot-blocker extraordinaire Tai Odiase, who led the NCAA in blocks per game last season with a 3.23 mark. Dixon and Odiase are two big reasons the Flames have been picked fourth in the Horizon League Preseason Poll.
Â
USF women's team will look to duplicate last year's effort against Sacramento State, when the Dons claimed a 95-94 victory in the Hornets Nest. Sacramento State plays a unique brand of basketball. Last season, the Hornets averaged 42.5 three-pointers per game and launched 587 more treys than their opponents.
