SAN FRANCISCO-- Competing at one of the most historical courses in the country, USF opened its fall season at the Olympic Club with a total score of 581 to sit in fourth place at the Olympic Invitational.
After two rounds, BYU sits atop the leaderboard with a total of 568, while last season's West Coast Conference champions, Saint Mary's is in second (575). Notre Dame is right behind in third place after shooting a total of 578. USF is in a tie for fourth with Big West Conference member, UC Davis.
After 36 holes, Stefano Mazzoli of TCU is leading the field with a 3-under score after carding rounds of 73 and 66. He is currently followed by a group of four players who are only one stroke behind him.
Senior Kraig McLeod leads the Dons after the first day, as the Pebble Beach native scored rounds of 74 and 67 to shoot 1-under on the day. In the second round, McLeod got off to a fast start- scoring a birdie on the par 5 first hole. He would continue his stretch of birdies on holes 5 and 7. The senior would go on to birdie the par 4 11th and par 3 13th to finish the second round with an impressive 4-under 67.
Coming off his first U.S. Amateur appearance last month, Henry Chung displayed steady play on the tough course which has hosted a number of U.S. Opens. After shooting a 73 in the opening round, Chung showcased an even-par front nine in his second round, as he did not record any bogeys. After a bogey on the 11th, Chung recorded his first birdie of the round on the par 4 12th.
In his first appearance for the Dons, Tim Widing grew more comfortable as the day went on. The 6-2 native of Sweden got off to a rocky start in the first 18 holes, but showed his composure and finished the round at an even-par 71.
Jalen Griffin would record rounds of 77 and 73, while Raymart Tolentino would shoot a total of 153.
Leading the Dons players in individual action is senior newcomer, Michael McAuley. The first year player from Christchurch, New Zealand. The senior would shoot a 74 in the morning, but would improve his score in the second round after recording two birdies on the front nine for a grand total of 146. Rounding out the individuals leaderboard are Mathias Wentjarvi (149), Max Alcorn (153), Michael DeAngelo (157) and Ashton Silk (160).
The final 18 holes will be played tomorrow as the first groups will tee off at 8:30 a.m. from the first and ninth tees.
